Chapter 8 - The War for River North

Victoria’s banishment sent shockwaves through the Chicago underworld.
Deprived of their lucrative partnership with the Slade Syndicate, the Vance family struck back in desperation. They forged a secret alliance with the Detroit Syndicate—the very same criminal organization that had murdered Darius’s sister six years ago.
By the end of the month, River North had become a battleground.
Freight trucks were hijacked near the docks, two of Darius’s downtown nightspots were targeted by arsonists, and armed guards were stationed every twenty feet along the perimeter of the Slade Estate. The peaceful sanctuary we had built inside the mansion was suddenly overshadowed by the impending threat of an all-out mob war.
Despite the danger, Darius refused to let me leave the estate.
"The safest place in Illinois is behind these walls, Elena," he told me one evening in the library as he reviewed tactical maps with Marcus. "Detroit knows about you. They know you are my vulnerability."
My heart skipped a beat at his words. "Your vulnerability?"
Darius paused, looking up from the maps. He signaled to Marcus, who nodded respectfully and quietly exited the library, closing the heavy doors behind him.
Darius stood up, walking over to where I sat by the fire. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, folded piece of paper—the yellow and blue crayon drawing Ruby had given him on his first week here. It was worn at the edges, clearly handled many times.
"Six years ago, when my sister died, I shut my heart down completely," Darius said softly, sitting in the armchair across from me. "I built an empire out of fear, violence, and stone. I believed that if I felt nothing, no one could ever hurt me again."
He looked at the drawing, then raised his eyes to mine.
"And then a desperate, brave woman walked into my club, holding her children, standing up to her abusive husband with the courage of a lioness," he continued, his deep voice thick with emotion. "You brought life back into this dead house, Elena. You and your daughters gave me a reason to want to be a good man again."
Tears gathered in my eyes as I looked at him—this terrifying, powerful man who held the city in his grip, showing me his open, bleeding heart.
"Darius..." I whispered, leaning forward.
He reached out, his hand gently framing my cheek, his thumb softly tracing my lower lip. "I love you, Elena. I love your strength, your fierce mother's heart, and I love those two little girls as if they were born of my own blood. If I have to burn this entire city to the ground to keep you safe, I will do it without a second thought."
May you like
"Don't burn the world for me, Darius," I wept softly, leaning into his warm touch. "Just stay alive for us. We need you."
He pulled me toward him, his lips meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, fire, and a promise carved in stone. For the first time in my life, I felt completely protected, utterly cherished, and deeply, irrevocably in love.
