Chapter 9 - The Siege of the Estate

The storm broke on a quiet Tuesday midnight.
A heavy fog rolled in from Lake Michigan, blanketing the grounds of the estate in thick white gloom. Inside, the girls were asleep in our suite, while Darius and his core security team were in the underground tactical room monitoring the dock perimeter feeds.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion rocked the mansion.
The floor shook violently, glass shattering from the high arched windows in the grand foyer. Alarms blared throughout the stone hallways as red emergency lights flickered on, bathing the estate in a bloody crimson glow.
"Elena!"
Darius burst into the east wing suite, a tactical vest strapped over his black shirt, a heavy automatic pistol in his hand. Marcus followed behind him, holding a submachine gun.
"Detroit hit the front gate with a armored ram," Marcus yelled over the wail of the sirens. "They have twenty men on the lawn! They're pushing toward the main entrance!"
I pulled Ruby and Mia close to my chest, my heart hammering like a trapped drum. "Darius... what about the girls?"
"The safe room beneath the library," Darius commanded, picking up Ruby in one arm and pulling me by the hand. "Move! Now!"
We sprinted through the crimson-lit hallways as the sharp, metallic sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the lower level. Heavy boots pounded against the marble stairs as Detroit mercenaries breached the front doors.
Darius led us into the library, pressing a hidden mechanism behind a carved oak bookshelf. The heavy wall swung open, revealing a reinforced steel door with a biometric keypad.
"Get inside," Darius ordered, entering the code and shoving the heavy steel door open. "It's bulletproof, air-filtered, and equipped with a direct satellite line to the federal police. You stay inside until I open it from the outside."
"No!" I cried, grabbing his tactical vest, tears blinding my eyes. "Come with us! Lock the door from the inside!"
Darius looked at me, his dark eyes filled with a fierce, unbreakable love. He leaned down, pressing a firm, passionate kiss against my lips, then dropped to one knee to kiss Ruby’s forehead.
"I have to end this tonight, little one," Darius whispered to Ruby. "So no bad men ever come to our home again."
"Be a good guy, Darius," Ruby sobbed, clutching her tiny stuffed bear to her chest. "Come back to Mommy."
Darius smiled—a rare, beautiful, genuine smile that lit up his rugged face. "I promise."

He stepped back, pulled the heavy steel door shut, and the deadbolts engaged with a sharp, heavy thud.
Inside the safe room, the sound of the battle outside became a muffled, distant echo. I sat on the carpeted floor, holding my daughters tight, praying with every fiber of my soul for the man who had given us a life worth living.
