Chapter 10 - The Garden of Red and Gold

The silence lasted for two agonizing hours.

Inside the safe room, the digital clock on the wall ticked steadily from 2:00 AM to 4:00 AM. I sat motionless, holding Mia against my chest while Ruby slept fitfully on a plush cot in the corner, her small hand gripping my sleeve.

Finally, the sharp electronic chime of the vault keypad sounded.

The heavy steel deadbolts disengaged with a series of loud clicks. My breath hitched in my throat as the door slowly swung outward.

Standing in the doorway was Darius.

His tactical vest was torn, his shirt stained with gunpowder and blood, and a deep cut bled along his jawline. But his eyes were clear, his posture upright, and behind him stood Marcus, battered but smiling.

"Darius!" I gasped, springing to my feet and throwing my arms around his neck, uncaring of the mud and blood on his vest.

He wrapped his massive arms around my waist, lifting me off my feet, burying his face in the crook of my neck as he let out a long, shuddering breath.

"It's over, Elena," he whispered, his voice trembling with exhaustion and relief. "The Vance family is under federal arrest. The Detroit syndicate has been completely cleared out of Illinois. They will never threaten us again."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy streamed down my cheeks as I kissed his cut jaw, his lips, his forehead. "You came back. You kept your promise."

"I will always come back to you," he said softly, setting me down and kneeling beside Ruby, who had woken up and was rubbing her eyes.

"Darius!" Ruby squealed, throwing her small arms around his neck. "You beat the bad guys!"

Darius laughed—a warm, rich sound that filled the safe room—holding the little girl tight against his chest. "I had a very good drawing to protect me, little one."

One Year Later

The morning sun shone brilliantly over the green hills of the Slade Estate.

The scars of the battle had been completely erased; the grand mansion had been fully restored, its high arched windows sparkling under the blue summer sky. The gardens were in full bloom, filled with vibrant red roses, white lilies, and the sound of birds singing in the ancient oak trees.

On the back terrace overlooking the lawn, a small gathering of close friends—Mrs. Gable, Marcus, and a few trusted staff members—sat around tables covered in white linen and fresh flowers.

Standing beneath a floral arch near the rose garden was Darius, dressed in an immaculate charcoal tuxedo. Beside him stood Marcus as his best man, holding a velvet ring box.

A string quartet began to play a gentle, beautiful melody.

I stepped onto the stone path, wearing a simple, elegant ivory silk gown that flowed around my ankles like liquid light. In my hands, I held a bouquet of white roses, but my eyes were locked entirely on the man waiting for me at the end of the aisle.

Preceding me down the path was five-year-old Ruby, dressed in a lace flower girl dress, proudly tossing pink rose petals onto the grass, while two-year-old Mia toddled beside her, holding a small basket.

When I reached the arch, Darius took my hands into his large, warm palms. His dark eyes were glossy with unshed tears as he looked down at me.

"A year ago, I was a woman abandoned in a dark club, with nowhere to take my children," I said, my voice clear and steady as I spoke my vows. "You didn't just give us a roof over our heads, Darius. You gave us safety, dignity, and a love deeper than I ever knew existed. You saved my life, and you gave my daughters a real father."

Darius squeezed my hands tightly, his voice deep and thick with devotion. "A year ago, I was a dead man living in a stone fortress. You brought light into my dark world, Elena. You showed me that I was capable of loving again. I promise to cherish you, protect you, and love our daughters for every remaining day of my life."

The justice of the peace smiled warmly. "By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss the bride."

Darius pulled me into his arms, dipping me gently as he pressed his lips to mine in a long, sweet kiss that echoed with the promise of an unbroken future. The small crowd erupted into warm applause and cheers.

Ruby ran up to us, tugging on Darius’s tux jacket until he lifted her up onto his hip, holding Mia in his other arm.

"Are you our real daddy now?" Ruby asked, her wide hazel eyes shining with hope.

Darius looked at the little girl, then at me, his face lit with a profound, radiant happiness.

"I have been your real daddy since the night you told me to be a good guy, sweetheart," Darius said softly, kissing her cheek. "And I'm never going anywhere."

As the afternoon sun cast a warm golden light over the estate, we walked back toward the house together—not as a mob boss and a maid, but as a family, whole, safe, and finally home.
