Chapter 7 - The Confrontation

The grand study was lit only by the roaring fire in the hearth.

I sat on the velvet sofa with Ruby asleep in my arms and Mia resting peacefully in her bassinet beside me. Mrs. Gable stood nearby, holding a warm blanket around my shoulders and serving me a cup of hot tea.

The heavy double doors of the study flew open.

Victoria Vance marched into the room, her eyes flashing with anger, though a flicker of genuine fear showed behind her posture as Marcus stepped in behind her, shutting the doors with a heavy bang.

"Darius! What is the meaning of this?" Victoria demanded, smoothing her white dress. "Your men pulled me out of my house at midnight like a common criminal!"

Darius sat behind his massive mahogany desk, his hands resting flat on the polished wood. He looked up slowly, his face an unreadable mask of cold rage.

"You threatened my staff, Victoria," Darius said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You entered my home, offered money to a woman under my protection, and threatened to use dirty police officers to steal her children."

Victoria’s jaw tightened, but she forced a cold, dismissive laugh. "She's a nobody, Darius! A south-side beggar you picked up from a club floor! I am the daughter of Senator Vance! My family controls thirty percent of your shipping routes through the Great Lakes!"

Darius stood up slowly, rounding his desk. He towered over her, his imposing presence casting a long, dark shadow across the Persian rug.

"Your family controls those routes because I allow them to," Darius said quietly. "And as of twelve o'clock tonight, the Slade Syndicate has terminated all contracts with Vance Logistics."

Victoria went pale. "You... you wouldn't dare. My father will ruin you! He'll pull your port licenses by morning!"

Darius reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a thick red folder, tossing it onto the coffee table in front of her.

"Inside that folder are twenty years of wiretap recordings, tax fraud receipts, and photographic evidence of your father's involvement in the 2018 harbor murders," Darius said smoothly. "If your father makes one phone call to the port authority, that entire file goes directly to the Special Prosecutor's office at federal court."

Victoria stared at the red folder as if it were a venomous snake. She took a step back, her hands trembling violently. "You... you prepared this against us?"

"I prepare for every threat to my empire," Darius replied coldly. "Including internal snakes."

He stepped closer to her, his voice dropping into an icy whisper that made her shudder. "You will pack your belongings and leave Chicago by sunrise. If you ever approach Elena, if you ever look toward her children, or if you set foot in River North again... I will release that file, and you will watch your father spend the rest of his life in a federal penitentiary."

Victoria looked at Darius, realizing with absolute, horrifying clarity that her hold over him was entirely shattered. She looked over at me, her eyes filled with a helpless, burning hatred, before turning on her heel and fleeing the room.

The heavy double doors clicked shut behind her.

The silence that followed was thick and heavy. Darius stood by the desk, taking a deep breath, smoothing the cuffs of his white dress shirt.

"She won't bother you again, Elena," he said, turning to face me. "No one in this city will ever threaten you or your daughters while I breathe."

I set my tea cup down, standing up slowly from the sofa. "Darius... you just tore up a multi-million-dollar contract for a maid."

May you like

Darius walked across the room, stopping inches away from me. He reached out, his large, warm hand gently lifting my chin until my eyes met his.

"You are not my maid, Elena," he whispered, his dark eyes burning with an intense, raw emotion he had spent weeks trying to conceal. "You never were."
