Chapter 3 - The Bloodline Ledger

The silence in the room was so dense it felt as though the air itself had solidified.

Seraphina—the name hung between them like a golden thread pulling a dark, shattered past into the light—stared at Vincent as if he had spoken in a language she had never heard before. Her gaze moved frantically from the yellowed photograph on the bed, to the silver pendant in her palm, and finally to the sharp, commanding face of the man standing over her.

"Sister?" she choked out, her voice barely a thread. "No... no, that's impossible. I... I can't be your sister. I don't have a brother!"

"You didn't know you had a family at all five minutes ago," Vincent reminded her gently, sitting back down in the leather chair. "Look at the photograph, Seraphina. Look at the pendant."

With trembling fingers, Seraphina picked up the old photograph. She traced the edge of the tiny silver pendant visible around the newborn infant’s neck in the picture. Then, she lifted her own pendant, holding the two side-by-side beneath the morning light.

The crest was an exact match: a lion rampant encircled by three five-pointed stars—the private seal of the original Moretti bloodline before the family split into rival syndicates three decades ago.

"Why?" she wept, the tears falling freely now, soaking into the fabric of her hospital gown. "If I am your sister... why was I raised by strangers? Why did that man lock me away in Switzerland? Why did no one come for me?"

Vincent reached out and opened the leather-bound journal he had brought down from his study, setting it open on her lap.

"In 1998," Vincent explained, his voice turning cold as he recounted the history written in his father's hand, "the Moretti family was at war with an international investment syndicate known as Apex Holdings. Apex was run by Victor Sterling’s father. They wanted control of our shipping routes, our real estate, and our financial reserves. To force my father into submission, Apex orchestrated a hit on our mother."

Seraphina gasped, her hand flying to her mouth.

"My mother survived the attack long enough to give birth to you in secret at a private estate in Calabria," Vincent continued, his dark eyes shadowed by ancient grief. "My father knew that if Apex found out a newborn daughter existed, they would use you as leverage to destroy everything he had built. So, he made a deal with his closest friend, an honorable businessman named Julian Bennett."

"Julian Bennett..." Seraphina repeated, the name sparking a faint, warm flicker of memory deep in the fog of her mind. "A man with kind eyes... a gray mustache... he used to read me stories by a fireplace..."

Vincent nodded. "Julian Bennett had no children. My father transferred twenty percent of the Moretti family’s liquid assets to Julian, along with full legal guardianship of you. You were raised as Claire Bennett to keep you completely invisible from Apex Holdings. My father paid for your protection every year until the day he died ten years ago."

"And when Julian Bennett died?" Seraphina asked, her voice trembling.

"Julian died two years ago," Vincent said, his jaw tightening into iron. "And the moment he passed, Victor Sterling executed a hostile takeover of Bennett’s estate. Sterling discovered the financial trust tied to your name. He realized who you really were—the secret blood heir to half the Moretti empire. If he controlled you, he could legally claim forty percent of my family's global assets."

Seraphina looked down at the coordinates engraved around the outer rim of the pendant. "The numbers... on the edge..."

"Coordinates," Vincent confirmed. "My father didn't just give Julian money to raise you. He hid the original bloodline ledgers—the documents that detail every legal account, every deed, and every hidden reserve belonging to the Moretti family—in a secure vault in Switzerland. The coordinates on your pendant are the location of that vault. And the key..."

Vincent pointed to the small, hollow center of the silver pendant.

"...is small enough to fit inside that silver casing. Sterling didn't want to kill you, Seraphina. He needed you alive, under heavy chemical sedation in that Zurich clinic, so he could search for the key without you ever remembering what it unlocked."

Seraphina held the pendant up to the light. She pressed her thumb against a tiny, almost invisible ridge near the top hinge.

CLICK.

The pendant sprang open.

Inside the hollow silver compartment lay a tiny, intricate steel micro-key, no larger than a thumbnail, glittering brilliantly in the morning sun.

A heavy knock sounded at the guest room door.

Vincent didn't flinch. "Enter."

Marcus stepped inside, his expression grim, carrying an encrypted tablet in his hand. "Boss. We have a situation at the harbor. Victor Sterling just filed an emergency international injunction with the Federal District Court. He’s claiming we kidnapped an incompetent heiress. Federal marshals are currently reviewing the warrant."

Vincent stood up slowly, his tall frame radiating a terrifying, lethal calm. "Let them review it."

"There’s more," Marcus added, lowering his voice. "Sterling’s men just intercepted our supply convoy near the south bridge. They didn't shoot to kill, Boss. They left a message painted on the side of our truck."

"What message?"

Marcus looked at Seraphina, then back at Vincent.

"Return the Bennett girl by midnight, or we release the Zurich medical reports to the media. We will prove she is an unstable imposter, strip her legal rights, and raze the Moretti estate to the ground."

Seraphina shrank back into the bed, panic flaring anew in her hazel eyes. "He’s going to turn the whole world against us... he’s going to make everyone think I'm crazy!"

Vincent walked over to the bed. He did not look at Marcus; his dark, unyielding eyes were locked entirely on his half-sister.

He reached out and gently placed his hand over her shaking, cold fingers, wrapping them tightly around the micro-key and the silver pendant.

"Let him try," Vincent said, his voice dropping into a register that made the windowpanes vibrate faintly. "Thirty years ago, my father hid you in the dark to keep you safe. But my father is dead, Seraphina. I run this family now."

May you like

He turned to Marcus with an order that signaled the start of an all-out war.

"Mobilize the entire Eastern Command. Call in the captains from New York and Chicago. By midnight, Victor Sterling will learn what happens when you threaten a Moretti on our own soil."
