Chapter 4 - The Lion's Council

By 3:00 PM, the Moretti estate had been transformed into an impenetrable command center.

Dozens of dark, heavily armored sedans were parked along the sweeping stone driveway. High-caliber tactical marksmen were stationed on the estate’s slate roof, their scopes sweeping the surrounding forest perimeter. Inside the grand formal dining hall, heavy oak tables were covered with encrypted laptops, tactical maps of the city, and legal documentation detailing Apex Holdings' corporate structure.

At the head of the long conference table sat Vincent.

To his left and right sat four men who commanded the most feared branches of the Moretti syndicate—Captains who controlled the docks, the financial networks, the union security, and the underground intelligence channels across three states.

At the far end of the room, dressed in a tailored charcoal wool dress provided by the estate’s staff, stood Seraphina.

Her dark curls were tied back neatly, revealing the sharp, aristocratic line of her jawline. Though her skin was still pale, the terror that had consumed her hours earlier had hardened into something else—a quiet, burning resolve. Beside her stood Dr. Harris and Marcus, ensuring her safety.

"Don Vincent," spoke Captain Dominic Russo—a veteran enforcer with graying hair and a deeply scarred face. "Sterling has bought off three municipal judges in the city district. If those federal marshals sign that warrant tonight, they won't just come with sirens. They’ll bring tactical teams to breach our perimeter under the guise of an international welfare check."

"Sterling is using the law as a battering ram because he knows he can't win a war against us on the streets," added Captain Leo Mercer, the syndicate's chief financial strategist. "Apex Holdings has leveraged ninety percent of its capital to secure Bennett’s assets. If Sterling doesn't produce the girl and the Switzerland vault key by Friday, his creditors will liquidate Apex entirely. He’s desperate."

"Desperate men make mistakes," Vincent said smoothly, sipping black coffee from a porcelain cup. "And Sterling’s biggest mistake was believing he could intimidate me with court orders."

Vincent turned his head, his dark eyes landing on Seraphina. "Step forward."

Seraphina took a deep breath, smoothing down her wool dress, and walked toward the head of the table. Every hardened mob captain in the room watched her with sharp, evaluating eyes. They saw the hazel eyes, the regal posture, and the silver pendant resting proudly against her collarbone.

"Show them," Vincent commanded softly.

Seraphina reached into her small velvet clutch, pulled out the micro-key, and set it on the mahogany table alongside the yellowed 1998 birth record retrieved from Dominick Moretti’s private safe.

Leo Mercer leaned forward, picking up the birth record with trembling fingers. He scanned the official seal of the Italian Ministry of Justice, his eyes widening in profound shock.

"My God," Mercer whispered, looking up at Seraphina in awe. "She... she carries the primary bloodline share. Dominick didn't leave forty percent to Julian Bennett... he left it in a private trust assigned to her biological signature."

A wave of astonished whispers rippled through the hard-faced captains.

"Which means," Vincent announced, his voice booming clearly across the grand hall, "Victor Sterling does not own Apex Holdings. He is an embezzler who forged conservatorship papers while my sister was held in a medically induced coma in Zurich."

Dominic Russo stood up, slamming his heavy fist onto the table, making the coffee cups rattle. "Then Sterling isn't just an enemy, Boss. He's a thief who has been stealing from the Moretti family bloodline for two years!"

"Precisely," Vincent said. He stood up, his massive, imposing presence commanding total, absolute silence.

"Tonight at midnight, Victor Sterling expects us to surrender Seraphina at the neutral docks of Pier 42," Vincent laid out the strategy, pointing to a tactical map spread across the center of the table. "He thinks he has backed us into a corner with his federal warrants and public threats."

"What is the play, Don Vincent?" Mercer asked, his eyes gleaming with dark anticipation.

"We give him his meeting," Vincent declared, a cold, predatory smile spreading across his face. "Mercer, leak a false report to Sterling's legal team indicating that we are open to negotiating a financial settlement in exchange for dropping the federal warrants. Make him believe I am prioritizing business over family."

"And the federal marshals?" Marcus asked.

"I have already contacted the Special Agent in Charge of the Regional Organized Crime Division," Vincent replied smoothly. "He owes his appointment to my late father. When Sterling steps onto Pier 42 tonight, he won't be meeting a frightened mob boss handing over a helpless girl. He will be walking into an international sting operation set up by the State Department for corporate fraud, kidnapping, and treason."

Seraphina stepped closer to Vincent, her voice quiet but unshakeable. "And what about me, Vincent? What do I do?"

May you like

Vincent looked down at his half-sister, reaching out to gently touch her shoulder—a rare, public display of affection that sent a clear message to every captain in the room.

"You walk beside me," Vincent said softly. "You look Victor Sterling in the eye, and you show him that the girl he locked in the dark has finally come home."
