Chapter 7 - The Viper's Last Strike

Two months later.
The city had returned to a state of quiet order under the absolute command of the Moretti family.
Victor Sterling had been formally sentenced to thirty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole. Apex Holdings had been completely dissolved by court order, its asset holdings liquidated and legally transferred into the newly formed Seraphina Moretti Global Foundation—a multi-hundred-million-dollar charitable trust dedicated to funding mental health research, protecting vulnerable heirs, and supporting victims of corporate human trafficking.
Seraphina had moved permanently into the west wing of the Moretti estate. She had reclaimed her life with astonishing grace, enrolling in a master’s program in art history at the city university, accompanied everywhere by a discreet, highly trained two-man security detail assigned personally by Marcus.
However, in the world of the syndicate, deep cuts rarely heal without leaving poisonous scars.
On a cold November evening, Vincent was sitting in his private study, reviewing quarterly shipping reports, when his encrypted desk phone rang.
He picked it up. "Vincent."
"Boss," Marcus’s voice sounded tight, urgent, and laced with panic—a tone Vincent had almost never heard from his chief enforcer. "We have a breach at the university library."
Vincent stood up so fast his heavy leather chair slammed into the wall behind him. "Explain."
"Sterling’s younger brother, Julian Sterling Jr.—the one who fled to Colombia six years ago—just re-entered the country under a forged passport," Marcus reported frantically. "He slipped past our airport watchers! He tracked Miss Seraphina to the university campus! He’s armed, Boss! He took three students hostage inside the rare manuscript wing!"
Vincent’s blood turned to liquid ice. "Where is her security team?"
"Both guards were hit with suppressed weapons in the parking garage," Marcus replied, his voice shaking. "They’re alive, but incapacitated. Police units are responding, but Julian Sterling is demanding to speak to you directly on the library landline. He says if you don't come alone within fifteen minutes, he’s going to execute everyone inside."
Vincent didn't waste another second speaking. He pulled a black tactical sidearm from his desk drawer, chambered a round with a sharp CLACK, and shoved it into his shoulder holster.
"Call the Captains," Vincent commanded as he sprinted down the grand staircase toward the garage. "Tell them to shut down every street within two miles of that campus. If Julian Sterling escapes tonight, I will burn this city to the ground."
Ten minutes later, Vincent’s sedan roared onto the university campus, blowing past red lights and leaping over curbs, screeching to a halt in front of the grand stone steps of the university library.
Red and blue police lights were flashing wildly across the ancient brick buildings, but the local police officers held their perimeter at the base of the steps—having received explicit orders from the Police Commissioner himself to let Vincent Moretti handle the interior breach.
Vincent stepped out of his car, dressed in a black leather jacket, his eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage. Marcus sprinted up beside him with three heavily armed enforcers.
"He’s on the second floor, Boss," Marcus whispered. "The manuscript room."
"Stay outside," Vincent ordered coldly. "Cover the fire escapes. If he sees a squad of men, he’ll panic."
"Boss, it’s a trap!" Marcus protested. "He wants revenge for his brother!"
"I don't care what he wants," Vincent said, pulling his weapon and stepping into the dark, silent foyer of the library. "He laid a hand on my sister."
Vincent moved through the shadowy stacks of books like a ghost, his leather boots making zero sound against the polished hardwood floors. He ascended the grand marble staircase to the second floor, stopping outside the heavy brass double doors of the Rare Manuscript Wing.
Inside, the warm golden lights were dim.
Through the frosted glass panel, Vincent could see two frightened college students tied to chairs near the center aisle. Standing ten feet away, holding a high-caliber handgun pressed against Seraphina’s temple, was a broad-shouldered man in a dark tactical jacket—Julian Sterling Jr.
Seraphina sat in a wooden study chair, her hands bound behind her back with plastic zip-ties. But she was not crying. Her head was held high, her hazel eyes fixed on the brass doors, as if she knew—with absolute, unshakeable certainty—that her brother was standing on the other side.
Vincent pushed the double doors open slowly, stepping into the room with his weapon held low at his side.
"Julian," Vincent spoke, his voice dropping into a register so dark, so cold, it seemed to freeze the very air in the room.
Julian Sterling Jr. spun around, digging the barrel of his gun harder into Seraphina’s temple, his face twisted in a manic, drug-fueled rage.
"Moretti!" Julian screamed, his eyes wild and bloodshot. "You destroyed my family! You put my brother in a federal cage! You stole our company! You took everything from us!"
"Your brother was a thief who stole from a child," Vincent said, taking a slow, deliberate step forward, his broad frame completely blocking the exit. "And you are a dead man standing in my way."
"Don't move!" Julian shrieked, tightening his finger on the trigger. "One more step and I blow her head off! Drop your gun! Drop it now!"
Seraphina looked directly into Vincent’s eyes. She didn't flinch. She didn't scream. She subtly shifted her weight in the wooden chair, tilting her head back just three inches—giving Vincent a clean, unobstructed line of sight to Julian’s forehead.
In that fraction of a second, an unspoken language passed between the Moretti siblings—a bond born of shared blood, absolute trust, and fierce intelligence.
"Do it, Vincent," Seraphina whispered clearly.
Julian started, confused by her words. "What?!"
BANG!
Before Julian Sterling could process what was happening, Seraphina slammed her heavy wooden chair backward with all her strength, her head smashing hard into Julian’s nose.
Julian’s head snapped back, his grip on the weapon slipping for a single microsecond.
That microsecond was all Vincent needed.
A single, suppressed shot echoed through the library wing.
Julian Sterling Jr. froze, a tiny red hole appearing directly between his eyebrows. His eyes went blank, and his heavy body crumpled backward onto the hardwood floor, lifeless before he even hit the ground.
Vincent sprinted across the room, dropping his weapon, and immediately dropped to his knees beside Seraphina. He pulled a tactical blade from his belt, slicing through her plastic wrist restraints in one swift motion.
"Are you hit?" Vincent asked frantically, his hands sweeping over her shoulders, checking her neck, his voice full of rare, unvarnished panic. "Seraphina, look at me! Did he shoot you?!"
Seraphina let out a long, trembling breath, throwing her arms around his neck, burying her face into his leather jacket.
"I'm fine," she sobbed, half-laughing through her tears. "I knew you were going to shoot him the moment you walked through that door."
Vincent held her tight against his chest, his hands trembling slightly as the adrenaline slowly drained from his body. He pressed a gentle kiss to the top of her dark curls, closing his eyes in profound gratitude.

"You're a true Moretti," Vincent whispered softly. "Fierce, brave... and entirely too reckless."
Seraphina pulled back slightly, looking into his sharp gray eyes with a warm, radiant smile. "I learned from the best."
