Chapter 2 - The Red Light of Justice

The sound of the front door being kicked off its hinges echoed through the mansion like a thunderclap.
Mark Darcy froze, the baseball bat hovering mid-air. The triumphant grin on Yasmin’s face melted into a mask of pure terror, and Gillian dropped her phone, the screen shattering against the marble floor.
"Police! Nobody move! Drop the weapon!"
A dozen heavily armed tactical officers flooded the living room, their laser sights painting red dots across my father’s chest. Leading the squad was Detective Marcus Vance, a stern-faced man who had been working closely with my grandmother’s attorney, Ana Brennan, for the past three months. Behind them stepped Ana herself, her silver hair perfectly coiffed, her expression as cold as ice.
Mark slowly raised his hands, the baseball bat clattering loudly against the floor. "Officers, thank God you're here!" he stammered, his voice instantly shifting into a tone of pathetic desperation. "My daughter—she had a psychotic break! She attacked us, fell down the stairs, and broke her own arm! We were just trying to restrain her!"
Yasmin quickly nodded, her voice trembling. "Yes, yes! She’s mentally unstable! Look at her, she’s delusional! We were trying to protect her!"
Detective Vance didn't even look at them. He walked straight over to me, kneeling down on the blood-stained marble. "Alana, can you hear me? The paramedics are right outside."
"I'm here, Detective," I whispered, the agony in my right forearm burning like fire, but a wave of adrenaline kept me conscious. I pointed my left hand toward the black brooch on my blouse. "The feed is secure. The audio and video have already been uploaded to the secure cloud server."
Ana Brennan stepped forward, snapping her briefcase open. She looked at Mark with profound contempt. "Mr. Darcy, the emergency alert transmitted not just the live video of you striking your daughter with a deadly weapon, but also the audio of you explicitly outlining your conspiracy to commit extortion, physical assault, and medical fraud."
Mark’s face drained of all color. He looked at Yasmin, then at the documents grabbed tightly in her hands. "That... that’s entrapment! She set us up!"
"It’s called a sting operation, Mark," Ana replied coldly. "And you walked right into it."
Two officers grabbed Mark, slamming him against the wall and pulling his arms behind his back. He howled in pain and rage, cursing my name. Another pair of officers moved toward Yasmin and Gillian, clicking handcuffs around their wrists. Gillian began to sob hysterically, screaming that she had nothing to do with it, that she was just recording a 'family argument.'
"You’re all going down for first-degree extortion, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, and conspiracy," Detective Vance stated, reading them their rights as they were dragged out of the room.

As the paramedics loaded me onto a stretcher, Ana walked beside me, squeezing my uninjured hand. "You did beautifully, Alana. Abigail would be so proud of your courage. Now, let the doctors take care of your arm. The real war has just begun, and we are going to strip them of absolutely everything."
As the ambulance doors slammed shut, I looked out the window at the flashing red and blue lights. For the first time in years, since my grandmother passed, I felt a spark of hope. They thought they had broken me. In reality, they had just signed their own warrant for destruction.
