Chapter 7 - The Falling Dominoes

With Mark Darcy’s full confession locked in, the legal dominoes began to fall with devastating speed. The federal prosecutors used his testimony and our hidden ledger to build an airtight case against Victor Vance and Apex Holdings.
But the drama wasn't over yet. Yasmin and Gillian, realizing Mark had betrayed them to secure his own deal, decided to launch a desperate counter-attack of their own.
From her jail cell, Yasmin hired a notorious, tabloid-chasing defense attorney named Richard Sterling. Within days, Sterling launched a massive media smear campaign against me, appearing on local news stations and true-crime podcasts.
"My client, Yasmin Darcy, and her innocent daughter Gillian are victims of a deeply sinister conspiracy orchestrated by Alana Darcy and a corrupt estate lawyer," Sterling claimed during a televised press conference. "We have evidence that the video was staged, that Alana intentionally provoked a family dispute, and that she has a long history of mental instability. They are trying to steal the estate from the rightful widow!"
Ana and I watched the broadcast from a secure apartment in San Francisco. I felt a surge of anger, but Ana simply sipped her tea, looking entirely unbothered.
"Let them talk," Ana said with a dangerous smile. "Sterling is playing to the court of public opinion because he knows he has absolutely no chance in a real court of law. In fact, he just played right into our hands."
"How?" I asked.
"By claiming the video was staged and that Gillian is an innocent bystander, he’s forcing the prosecution to introduce the original, unedited video file from Gillian’s own phone into the public record. The FBI forensic team successfully recovered it from her cracked phone."
Two days later, the preliminary hearing for Yasmin and Gillian began at the Fremont Courthouse. The courtroom was packed to the brim with reporters, cameras, and curious onlookers. Yasmin and Gillian sat at the defense table, dressed in formal civilian clothes, looking poised, elegant, and entirely smug. They genuinely believed Sterling’s media campaign had turned the tide.
The judge, a no-nonsense woman named Honorable Evelyn Torres, called the court to order. "Mr. Sterling, you have claimed that the evidence against your clients is manufactured. The prosecution has submitted the original video file retrieved directly from defendant Gillian Darcy’s cell phone cloud backup. We will play it now."
The lights in the courtroom dimmed, and the massive projection screen came to life.
But it wasn't just the clip of the assault that played. The FBI had recovered the entire recording, including the five minutes before Mark struck me—minutes where Yasmin and Gillian were caught on camera openly discussing how they were going to use the money from the Sacramento buildings to buy a yacht, how much they despised my deceased grandmother, and how they couldn't wait to see me "bloody and begging."
The audio played clearly through the courtroom speakers: “Make sure you get a good angle when Dad hits her,” Yasmin’s voice said on tape, accompanied by Gillian’s giggling response: “Don’t worry, Mom, this is going to be viral gold if we ever need to blackmail her later.”
A collective gasp echoed through the courtroom. Richard Sterling’s face turned bright red. He looked down at his notes, completely speechless. Yasmin sank back into her chair, her elegant facade shattering into raw terror, while Gillian covered her face and began to sob loudly.

Judge Torres looked over her glasses at the defense table, her expression filled with profound disgust. "Mr. Sterling, do you have any further arguments regarding the 'innocence' of your clients?"
Sterling slowly stood up, his voice cracking. "No, Your Honor."
