Chapter 3 - The Hospital and the Hidden Ledger

The white ceiling of the Fremont Memorial Hospital blurred as the heavy doses of painkillers finally took effect. My right arm was encased in a thick fiberglass cast, shattered badly enough to require emergency surgery and two titanium pins. But the physical pain was nothing compared to the profound sense of relief washing over me.

Ana Brennan sat in the armchair beside my bed, a laptop resting on her knees. The morning sun filtered through the blinds, casting long, sharp shadows across the room.

"The surgery was a success, Alana," Ana said softly, looking up from her screen. "The doctors say you’ll regain full mobility with physical therapy. But more importantly, the legal trap has snapped shut."

"Are they still in custody?" I asked, my voice raspy.

"Mark’s bail has been denied due to the severity of the video evidence and the flight risk posed by his financial situation. Yasmin and Gillian are currently being held at the county jail. Yasmin’s high-priced lawyers are scrambling, but the video from your brooch leaves absolutely zero room for defense. It clearly shows the bat, the threat, and the forced signature."

I leaned back against the pillows. "What about the inheritance? The papers I signed?"

Ana smiled, a rare, genuine expression of triumph. "The moment you signed your name, you used the signature variation we practiced. You signed as 'Abigail A. Darcy' instead of 'Alana M. Darcy'. Not only does that immediately invalidate the document on grounds of forgery and duress, but it also triggered a pre-arranged forensic audit of all your father’s shell corporations."

She turned the laptop toward me, showing a complex web of financial transactions, banking routing numbers, and offshore accounts.

"Abigail always knew Mark was skimming money from the family estate long before she died," Ana explained. "She hid a master ledger inside the safe at the Sonoma agave ranch. She told me that if Mark ever crossed the line into physical violence, it meant he was desperate enough to expose his hidden assets. Look at this."

My eyes scanned the spreadsheets. Over the past five years, Mark had embezzled over four million dollars from the Darcy family trust, funneling it into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands to cover massive gambling debts and failed real estate investments.

"He wasn't just trying to steal your inheritance because he's greedy, Alana," Ana said, her tone growing deadly serious. "He’s completely broke. If he didn't get his hands on the Sacramento apartment complexes and the Sonoma ranch by the end of this month, his creditors were going to seize everything he owns, including the Fremont mansion."

"So he resorted to violence out of sheer desperation," I murmured.

"Exactly. And now, we have the leverage to not just defend your inheritance, but to launch a counter-suit that will bankrupt him completely. But we must be careful. Mark has dangerous friends, people he owes money to. When they realize the inheritance isn't coming, they will become desperate too."

Suddenly, my phone on the bedside table buzzed. It was an unknown number. I looked at Ana, who nodded for me to answer and pressed the record button on her laptop.

I picked it up with my left hand and put it on speaker. "Hello?"

"Alana," a sinister, unfamiliar male voice purred from the other end. "Congratulations on the performance last night. Very dramatic. But let's cut to the chase. Your father owes us five million dollars. If we don't get the deeds to those Sacramento properties by Friday, your other arm won't be the only thing that breaks. Tell your lawyer to drop the charges, or we’ll make sure you never walk out of that hospital."

The line went dead.
