Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Reckoning

The trial of Yasmin and Gillian Darcy was short, brutal, and definitive. The overwhelming forensic evidence, combined with the devastating unedited video, left the jury with only two hours of deliberation before returning with a verdict.

Guilty on all counts.

One month later, the courtroom was packed once again for the formal sentencing hearing. I sat in the front row, wearing a simple navy blue dress. My cast had been removed, replaced by a lighter removable brace, and I could finally move my fingers again. Ana sat next to me, holding a folder containing the final judicial orders for the dissolution of the Darcy family trust.

Judge Torres looked down from the bench at the defendants. Mark had already been sentenced the week prior to twelve years in a medium-security federal facility under protective custody. Now, it was Yasmin and Gillian’s turn.

"Yasmin Darcy, Gillian Darcy," Judge Torres began, her voice echoing with authority. "In my twenty-five years on the bench, I have rarely witnessed such a shocking display of cruelty, greed, and utter lack of human empathy. You not only conspired to rob a young woman of her rightful inheritance left by a beloved grandmother, but you actively participated in and celebrated a brutal physical assault against her."

Yasmin looked up, her eyes red, her voice cracking. "Your Honor, please, I was just trying to support my husband—"

"Silence," Judge Torres cut her off sharply. "The evidence shows you were a willing, enthusiastic instigator. For the charges of conspiracy to commit first-degree extortion, accessory to aggravated assault, and destruction of evidence, I sentence you, Yasmin Darcy, to eight years in state prison without the possibility of parole for the first five years."

Yasmin let out a guttural shriek, collapsing into her chair as the bailiffs moved in to restrain her.

"As for you, Gillian Darcy," the judge continued, looking at my stepsister, who was trembling violently. "You found amusement in human suffering. You believed your wealth and status shielded you from accountability. For your active role in the conspiracy and extortion, I sentence you to four years in a women’s correctional facility."

Gillian wailed, reaching out for her mother as the handcuffs were clicked around their wrists. They were led out of the courtroom through the side door, their expensive clothes and arrogant smiles gone forever.

As the courtroom cleared, Detective Vance and Agent Lin walked over to me, offering their congratulations.

"Victor Vance just took a plea deal for twenty-five years," Agent Lin informed us. "Apex Holdings is officially dead. Your safety is completely guaranteed, Alana."

"Thank you, Agent Lin. Thank you, Detective," I said, shaking their hands with my left hand, a profound sense of closure washing over me.

Ana tapped the folder in her arms. "And now for the best news, Alana. The court has officially stripped Mark, Yasmin, and Gillian of every single asset associated with the Darcy name. The Fremont mansion, the Sacramento apartments, the Lake Tahoe house, and the Sonoma ranch are now 100% yours, free and clear of all debts and liabilities. You have won, my dear. Completely and utterly."
