Chapter 4 - Shadows in the Shadows

The threat hung in the sterile hospital air like a toxic gas. Ana immediately closed her laptop and picked up her phone to contact Detective Vance.

"They’re turning up the heat," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs. "Who are these people?"

"Loan sharks," Ana said grimly, waiting for the detective to pick up. "Mark got involved with a predatory lending syndicate disguised as a private equity firm in San Francisco. They go by the name of Apex Holdings, run by a man named Victor Vance—no relation to the detective, fortunately. They are ruthless."

Within an hour, Detective Vance arrived at my room with two uniform officers. After listening to the recorded phone call, his expression darkened.

"We need to move you, Alana," Vance said. "This hospital isn't secure enough if Apex Holdings is involved. We have a safehouse in the foothills near Napa, completely off the grid. Ana, you’ll go with her. We’ll maintain a rotating security detail."

"What about Mark and the others?" I asked.

"Mark is singing like a canary in jail, trying to negotiate a plea deal by throwing his wife and stepdaughter under the bus," Vance revealed with a look of disgust. "He claims Yasmin was the mastermind behind the coercion plot. Meanwhile, Yasmin is turning on him, claiming he forced her to record it. They’re tearing each other apart to save their own skins."

"Good," I said, feeling a cold satisfaction. "Let them destroy each other."

That evening, under the cover of darkness, I was discharged from the hospital in a wheelchair, draped in a heavy blanket to obscure my face. We were driven in an unmarked SUV up into the winding, foggy roads of Napa Valley. The safehouse was a modest, heavily fortified cabin surrounded by dense pine trees.

For the next three days, the cabin became our command center. While my arm throbbed with a dull, persistent ache, Ana and I worked tirelessly. Using the hidden ledger we retrieved from the Sonoma ranch safe via one of Ana’s trusted couriers, we began mapping out the exact connection between Mark Darcy and Apex Holdings.

It turned out the rabbit hole went much deeper than simple gambling debts. Mark hadn't just borrowed money; he had actively assisted Apex Holdings in laundering dirty money through the Darcy estate's property management accounts.

"Look at these receipts, Ana," I pointed with my left hand to a series of inflated maintenance invoices for the Sacramento buildings. "They were overcharging for renovations that never happened, moving hundreds of thousands of dollars at a time."

"This is the smoking gun," Ana gasped, her eyes wide. "This isn't just extortion anymore, Alana. This is a federal RICO case. If we hand this over to the FBI, it won't just destroy your father—it will dismantle Victor Vance’s entire criminal empire."

Just as Ana spoke, the lights in the cabin flickered and suddenly died, plunging us into total darkness. Outside, the distant sound of a security fence being cut cut through the silent night air.
