Chapter 1 - Into the Lion’s Den

The black sedan sliced through the torrential downpour like a shadow navigating the underworld. Inside, the atmosphere was suffocatingly quiet, punctuated only by the rhythmic slapping of the windshield wipers and the heavy, ragged breathing of Elena Vargas.

"Lose them," Matthew Carranza commanded, his voice a low, gravelly baritone that vibrated through the leather of the seat. He didn't look at the rear window; he didn't need to. His driver, a broad-shouldered man named Leo, simply nodded, his knuckles whitening on the steering wheel.

Elena risked a glance behind them. The headlights of her stepmother's SUV flared blindingly against the rain-slicked glass. They were gaining. "They won't stop," she whimpered, her voice cracking as she clutched Matthew’s oversized suit jacket around her shivering frame. The scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and raw power radiated from the fabric, acting as a bizarre anchor in the middle of her terror. "Isabel... she bought that SUV specifically because it has an armored chassis. They will ram us if they have to."

Matthew turned his head slowly, his piercing dark eyes locking onto hers. There was no fear in his expression—only a cold, calculating detachment that made him look less like a savior and more like a predator evaluating an intruder. "Let them try," he murmured.

Leo suddenly yanked the wheel to the right, sending the heavy luxury vehicle careening down a narrow, unlit service road that cut through a dense patch of woods. The tires screamed against the mud and gravel. Behind them, the SUV attempted to follow, but its larger frame was its disadvantage. The headlights bounced violently before swerving out of sight as Leo executed a flawless, high-speed turn into a hidden underground parking structure, the heavy iron gates slamming shut behind them just as the SUV roared past the entrance on the main road.

The silence that followed inside the concrete garage was deafening.

Elena let out a breath she felt she had been holding since she jumped out of the bathroom window. Her hands were shaking so violently she could barely hold the lapels of Matthew's coat. "Thank you," she whispered, looking up at him through tear-soaked lashes. "You don't know what you just saved me from."

Matthew didn't answer immediately. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a pristine white handkerchief, and handed it to her. "Clean the blood from your face," he said coldly. "I dislike mess in my vehicle."

Though his words were harsh, his actions spoke differently. He signaled to Leo, who immediately stepped out of the car to open Elena's door. As she attempted to step out onto the cold concrete, her cut and bleeding feet gave out beneath her. She braced for the impact of the ground, but it never came.

Strong, unyielding arms scooped her up before she could fall. Matthew held her effortlessly against his chest, his dark eyes staring down into hers. "You are safe from them here," he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. "But remember this, Elena Vargas: you have traded a den of wolves for a lion's castle. Do not make me regret opening my door."
