Chapter 8 - The Confrontation at the Docks

The rain had returned, drumming a familiar, ominous beat against the roof of the black sedan as it pulled up to an abandoned industrial warehouse near the harbor. Fog rolled off the dark water, swallowing the structure in a ghostly shroud.
Matthew, Elena, and Leo stepped out of the car. Matthew held a large black umbrella over Elena, his hand resting reassuringly on the small of her back. They walked through the rusted side door, their footsteps echoing in the cavernous, dimly lit space.
In the center of the warehouse, surrounded by cardboard boxes and burning barrels of paper, stood Isabel Vargas. Her hair was messy, her expensive clothes stained with soot. She was frantically feeding documents into the fire.
"Isabel," Elena’s voice rang out through the emptiness.
Isabel spun around, a half-burned folder dropping from her hands. When she saw Elena standing there, looking beautiful and protected by Matthew, a feral, unhinged look came over her face. "You! You ruined everything! I gave you a roof over your head! I spent millions on your education, and this is how you repay me? By running to the enemy?"
"You didn't raise me, Isabel," Elena said, stepping out from under Matthew's umbrella, her voice steady and full of power. "You imprisoned me. You used my father's money to fund your greed, and when that ran out, you tried to sell my body. It's over. The police know about the offshore accounts. Mr. Ambrose has been arrested."
Isabel laughed, a shrill, desperate sound. "You think you've won because you're sleeping with a Carranza? Look at him, Elena! His father killed your father! The Carranzas are monsters!"

"My father died of a broken heart because you drove him to despair, Isabel," Elena countered, refusing to let the woman manipulate her anymore. "Matthew is twice the man his father ever was. He protects people. You destroy them."
Matthew stepped forward, his eyes fixed on the burning barrels. "It’s over, Isabel. Your network is gone. Your assets have been seized. You have nothing left to trade."
