Chapter 2 - The Price of Protection

Elena woke up to the smell of fresh coffee and crisp linen. For a terrifying second, she thought she was back in her bedroom at the Vargas estate, waiting for Isabel to drag her out by her hair. She bolted upright, a gasp escaping her lips, only to realize she was in a massive, ultra-modern bedroom overlooking a skyline blurred by the morning mist.
The walls were dark slate, the furniture minimalist and impossibly expensive. On a nearby armchair sat a collection of shopping bags from the city’s most exclusive boutiques.
"You're awake," a voice spoken from the shadows near the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Matthew stood there, dressed in a fresh charcoal suit, a tablet in his hand. He looked rested, impeccable, and utterly lethal.
"Where am I?" Elena asked, pulling the heavy duvet up to her chin.
"My penthouse. The most secure residential building in the city," Matthew replied, walking over to stand at the foot of the bed. He tossed the tablet onto the mattress. On the screen was a news article detailing the "sudden disappearance" of the Vargas family heiress, alongside a statement from Isabel claiming Elena was mentally unstable and required immediate medical intervention.
"She's trying to discredit me," Elena whispered, her eyes filling with fresh panic. "If she convinces the public I'm crazy, she can sign over my father's shares to Mr. Ambrose legally."
"I know," Matthew said smoothly. "I spent the last four hours dismantling your stepmother’s financial portfolio. It seems her 'business empire' is nothing but a house of cards built on bad debt and black market favors. Mr. Ambrose was her last hope."
Elena looked up at him, bewildered. "Why are you doing this? You don't even know me."
Matthew leaned down, placing his hands on the footboard, his gaze boring into hers. "I know your father’s legacy. Lucas Vargas was an honorable man. Your stepmother, however, has been a thorn in my side for three years. She owes my firm a significant amount of money, and she thought she could use Ambrose to fight me." A dark, dangerous smile touched his lips. "You climbing into my car wasn't just a miracle for you, Elena. It was the final piece of the puzzle I needed to destroy her."

"What do you want from me?" she asked, sensing the catch.
"Your cooperation," Matthew said. "Isabel will use every legal loop-hole to drag you back. But she cannot touch you if you are under my legal protection. I am offering you a contract. A fake engagement. We announce it to the press today. It keeps you safe, and it gives me the leverage to strip Isabel of every asset she possesses."
