Chapter 4 - Playing with Fire

Isabel’s face turned an ugly shade of purple. "Fiancée? Don't be ridiculous! She was arranged to marry Mr. Ambrose last night! You are interfering with a legal family contract!"

"An illegal arrangement made under duress is not a contract," Matthew replied coldly, stepping forward so that he completely shielded Elena with his body. He signaled to Leo, who handed a thick manila folder to the leading police officer. "Inside that folder, officer, you will find bank statements proving Mrs. Vargas received a five-million-dollar wire transfer from Mr. Ambrose’s offshore account precisely twenty minutes before she locked Elena in a room with him. In my world, we call that human trafficking. I suggest you read it carefully before you decide whose side you are on."

The police officer opened the folder, his eyes widening as he scanned the documents. He looked up at Isabel, his demeanor instantly changing. "Mrs. Vargas, I think you and your legal team need to come down to the station to clarify these transactions."

Isabel looked trapped. She glared past Matthew, her eyes locking onto Elena with pure malice. "You think you've won, you little ungrateful brat?" she spat, her voice dropping to a vicious whisper. "You think this man cares about you? You're just a pawn to him. He will use you up and throw you away just like your father did to this family!"

Before Elena could answer, Matthew spoke, his voice dangerously low. "Take them out of my sight before I ensure Mrs. Vargas spends the rest of her life in a maximum-security cell."

As the police escorted a furious Isabel out, the lobby fell quiet again. Elena leaned against a marble pillar, the adrenaline leaving her body all at once. She looked at Matthew, her mind spinning with Isabel's words. A pawn. Was that all she was?

Matthew turned to her, his expression unreadable. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing the edge of the bruise on her cheek. "She is wrong about one thing, Elena," he said softly, his voice surprisingly warm. "I don't throw away what belongs to me."
