Chapter 5 - The Test of Blood

Senator Robles’s face turned from pale white to a dark, dangerous red. He pointed a trembling finger at Diego. "You think you can play legal games with me, Villaseñor? That child has no legal status! Her mother was an unregistered worker in your home! Under state law, until paternity is scientifically proven by a court-appointed lab, the child belongs in a temporary state care shelter!"

"Touch my daughter," Diego said, stepping right up to the Senator, his imposing height towering over the older politician, "and you will not leave this property on your own two feet."

The tension in the foyer reached a boiling point. The two child service officers looked at each other nervously, realizing they had been dragged into a dangerous high-level feud between two of the most powerful families in the country.

"Officers," Mateo Vance spoke up calmly, addressing the agency workers. "If you attempt to execute an invalid removal order signed by a compromised judge, I will personally file individual federal lawsuits against you for civil rights violations. You will lose your licenses and your pensions by nightfall."

The lead child services officer swallowed hard, stepping back. "Senator... with all due respect, if Mr. Vance has filed an emergency paternity injunction and independent medical sampling, our agency must stand down until the lab results are returned."

"Nonsense!" Paulina shrieked. "Take the child now!"

At that exact moment, a soft voice echoed from the archway leading to the living room.

"Mommy?"

Everyone turned.

Little Valentina stood in the doorway, wearing a soft pink cotton dress that Diego had ordered for her that morning. She was holding her faded stuffed rabbit, her large, innocent dark eyes blinking against the bright morning light filling the foyer.

Beside her, Marisol stepped out, her chin lifted, no longer hiding in the shadows of the kitchen.

Valentina looked at the loud strangers, then looked at Diego. Without a moment of hesitation, the little three-year-old girl walked right past the Senator, past the police officers, and reached out her tiny hands toward Diego.

"Daddy," she whispered softly.

The word hung in the air like a sacred blessing.

It was the first time she had ever spoken the word.

Diego felt a tear slice down his face. He dropped to his knees right in front of the child, picking her up into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest, shielding her from the hostile eyes in the room.

"I'm right here, sweetheart," Diego whispered into her hair. "Daddy's right here."

Senator Robles stared at the scene. He looked at the child’s face—the unmistakable, undeniable carbon copy of Diego Villaseñor’s features. Even the most corrupt judge in Mexico could not deny the blood that bound them.

The state prosecutor turned to the Senator. "Senator Robles... we are leaving. There is no legal ground here."

"This isn't over, Villaseñor!" Senator Robles hissed, his voice venomous as he realized his political trap had completely failed. "My family will destroy your reputation in the press! You will be a pariah in Santa Fe!"

"Get out of my house," Diego said without looking at him, his focus entirely on his daughter resting her head on his shoulder.

Paulina threw her hands up in a dramatic gesture of rage and turned around, her high heels clicking loudly as she and her father were escorted out the heavy iron doors by Estepan's security team.

When the heavy doors slammed shut, a wave of profound relief washed over the foyer.

Marisol walked over to Diego, dropping to her knees beside him, her eyes filled with tears of gratitude and awe.

"She called you Daddy," Marisol whispered softly.

May you like

Diego looked at Marisol, his eyes dark with an overwhelming, tender light. "She knows, Marisol. Blood knows."

He reached out his free hand and gently cupped Marisol's cheek, wiping away a stray tear with his thumb. "And now... we fight for our future."
