Chapter 8 - Blood and Iron

"LET GO OF MY DAUGHTER!"
Diego’s voice cracked across the estate like a bolt of lightning.
The sound was so primal, so terrifyingly fierce, that the intruder holding Valentina froze for a split second, glancing back in panic.
That split second was all Diego needed.
He sprinted across the lawn with the speed of a predator, closing the distance between them in seconds. The man holding Marisol shoved her violently onto the grass and pulled a heavy metal wrench from his tool belt, swinging it wildly toward Diego's head as he intercepted them.
Diego ducked under the arc of the wrench with brutal efficiency, lunged forward, and slammed his shoulder directly into the man’s chest, sending the attacker crashing hard onto the stone walkway, knocking the wind out of him instantly.
The second intruder, panicking, dropped Valentina onto the soft grass and pulled a switchblade from his pocket.
"Stay back, Villaseñor! Stay back or I slice the kid!" the man screamed, lunging down to grab Valentina by her arm.
Marisol, having scrambled to her feet, threw herself over Valentina’s body, shielding her daughter with her own back. "Take me! Take me instead!"
Before the knife could come down, a deafening crack echoed across the garden walls.
Estepan rounded the corner of the house, his service weapon drawn, firing a precise warning shot into the trunk of a nearby oak tree.
"DROP THE WEAPON OR THE NEXT ONE GOES INTO YOUR KNEE!" Estepan roared, flanked by two backup security guards who swarmed the yard with tactical precision.
The intruder dropped the switchblade instantly, raising his hands in the air as Estepan kicked him hard to the ground and slapped steel cuffs around his wrists.
Within seconds, the entire threat was neutralized. The two men were pinned face down in the grass, subdued and immobile.
Diego didn't look at them. He dropped to his knees beside Marisol, who was sobbing uncontrollably, clutching Valentina to her chest.
"Marisol... Marisol, look at me," Diego pleaded, his hands shaking as he pulled them both into his arms. "Are you alright? Is she hurt?"
"We're... we're okay," Marisol wept, pressing Valentina’s face into her shoulder. "She's safe... oh God, she's safe..."
Valentina was crying softly, her little body trembling, but she wrapped her small arms around Diego’s neck the moment he pulled her close. "Daddy... the bad men..."
"I've got you, sweetheart. Nobody will ever touch you again. I promise you," Diego whispered, kissing her forehead over and over, his own eyes burning with hot, furious tears.
He stood up slowly, handing Valentina gently to Marisol, and turned around.
The captured intruders were being hauled to their feet by Estepan’s men. Diego walked over to them, his face a mask of cold, terrifying wrath. He didn't yell. His voice was barely above a whisper, but it carried the weight of a hanging judge.
"Who sent you?" Diego asked.
The lead intruder, spitting blood onto the grass, smirked. "You think we'll tell you, billionaire? You're dead meat—"
"Estepan," Diego interrupted coldly. "Call the federal prosecutor directly. Tell him these men were caught in an armed kidnapping attempt of a minor. And tell him to issue an immediate federal arrest warrant for Paulina Robles as the primary financial instigator."

The intruder's smirk vanished instantly. "Wait—what? No, look, man—"
"Take them to the county holding cells," Diego ordered, turning his back on them. "Let them rot until their trials."
