Chapter 7 - The Final Gambit

Two weeks later, the legal name change and birth certificate correction for Valentina were finalized without further resistance from the broken Robles family. Senator Robles had retreated from public view, hospitalized under the stress of an impending federal corruption indictment.
Paulina, however, had not surrendered.
Driven by a toxic cocktail of wounded pride, social humiliation, and greed, she had liquidated her remaining personal jewelry and secret cash reserves to hire Victor Blake's old criminal associates—a desperate trio of fixers willing to do anything for a high payday.
Her objective wasn't legal anymore. It was pure destruction.
It was a breezy Saturday afternoon. The sun was warm, and the back gardens of the Villaseñor estate were alive with color. Eager to give Marisol a moment of relaxation, Diego had arranged for a private landscape tour of the south courtyards, while Estepan and his security team monitored the perimeter gates.
Marisol sat at a wrought-iron patio table under a white umbrella, sketching architectural ideas for the upcoming children’s foundation wing. A few yards away, Valentina was chasing a bright yellow butterfly across the emerald lawn, giggling as it fluttered near the rose bushes.
Diego was inside his study wrapping up a conference call with his international construction directors.
Suddenly, a black panel van bearing false utility company logos pulled up to the service entrance on the north side of the estate—an area where minor garden repairs were occasionally scheduled.
Two men wearing high-visibility vests stepped out of the van, carrying heavy toolboxes. They flashed a laminated badge to the junior guard at the side gate, claiming an emergency water main valve check ordered by the municipal district.
The guard, distracted by a radio call from the main gate, buzzed them through.
It was a fatal lapse in security.
Within three minutes, the two men moved swiftly across the back lawn, ignoring the flowerbeds and heading directly toward the southern terrace where Valentina was playing.
Marisol looked up from her sketchpad just as a large shadow fell across her table.
Before she could scream, a heavy hand clamped over her mouth, pinning her arms back against the iron chair.
"Don't make a sound, or the kid gets it," a harsh, gravelly voice hissed in her ear.
Marisol's eyes widened in sheer terror. She looked toward the lawn. The second man had scooped Valentina up into his arms. The little girl let out a shrill, terrified shriek, dropping her wooden toy onto the grass as a thick rag was pressed over her mouth.
"LILY—!" Marisol choked out, struggling with all her might against the heavy grip of her attacker, knocking her table and sketchpad crashing to the stone patio.
From the second-floor library window, Estepan happened to look down toward the south gardens.
His blood ran cold.
"CODE RED! INTRUDERS ON THE SOUTH LAWN!" Estepan roared into his tactical radio, sprinting down the grand staircase like a man possessed. "ALL UNITS INTERCEPT!"

Inside his study, Diego heard the commotion, followed by Estepan’s urgent roar over the estate intercom.
Diego didn't hesitate. He vaulted over his mahogany desk, flung open the heavy French doors leading directly to the terrace, and burst outside into the blinding sunlight just as the two intruders began dragging Valentina toward the service van.
