Chapter 3 - The Broken Shell

The quiet that settled over the mansion was heavy, cold, and suffocating.

Daniel stood alone in the center of the living room. The silence was broken only by the ticking of the grandfather clock in the corner and the soft pitter-patter of rain starting to hit the giant glass windows.

He walked over to the console table, picked up his smartphone, and stopped the recording. The file length read 14 minutes, 22 seconds. He immediately uploaded three encrypted backups to his private legal team, his personal server, and the district attorney’s secure portal.

Then, the strength in his legs gave out.

Daniel collapsed onto the sofa where his children had been huddled minutes before. He buried his face in his hands, his broad shoulders shaking with silent, agonizing sobs.

The guilt washed over him like a tidal wave of hot lead. He had spent the last fourteen months traveling to London, Tokyo, and New York, closing fifty-million-dollar shipping deals, believing he was securing his children’s future. In reality, he had been leaving them in a house of horrors, locked in dark pantries, beaten with wooden hangers by a woman he had paid to protect them.

"Mr. Brooks...?"

A quiet, gentle voice interrupted his thoughts.

Daniel raised his head, wiping his face quickly with his sleeve. Dr. Reynolds, the family physician who had taken care of Noah and Ava since birth, stood near the doorway holding a leather medical bag. His face was grave and deeply somber.

"How are they, Doc?" Daniel asked, his voice hoarse.

Dr. Reynolds sat down in the armchair opposite him. "Physically... they are going to recover, Daniel. Noah has deep contusions on his upper arms and shoulders—consistent with blunt force strikes from a heavy object. Ava has a second-degree linear laceration on her shoulder, along with severe bruising on her wrists where she was held down."

Daniel’s fists clenched so tightly his fingernails drew small specks of blood from his palms. "And mentally?"

Dr. Reynolds released a long, tired sigh. "They are terrified you're going to send them away. Serena spent months systematically breaking their spirit. She told them that you were tired of them, that you only cared about your company, and that if they ever complained to you, you would sign papers putting them in an institution."

Daniel choked back a ragged breath. "My God..."

"They need you now, Daniel," Dr. Reynolds said firmly, resting a hand on Daniel’s shoulder. "Not your money, not your security guards, and not your company. They need their father."

Daniel stood up immediately, his eyes filling with a fierce, unbreakable determination. "I'm going up to them."
