Chapter 7 - The Arrest at the Grand Regent

In the penthouse suite of the Grand Regent Hotel, suitcases were scattered across the plush velvet carpet.
Serena was frantically tossing designer silk dresses, diamond jewelry, and stacks of cash into a large leather duffel bag. Her hair was messy, her eyes manic, her hands shaking so violently she could barely zip the bag shut.
"Pick up! Pick up, you idiot!" she screamed into her phone, holding it against her ear as she dialed Harrison Sterling’s office for the tenth time.
The call went straight to voicemail: "The subscriber you are trying to reach has disconnected their line..."
"Traitor!" Serena shrieked, throwing her thousand-dollar phone against the wall, shattering the screen into a hundred pieces.
She grabbed her passport and her leather bag, sprinting toward the suite's front door. She grabbed the handle and yanked it open.
Standing in the hallway were eight armed officers from the Chicago Police Department Tactical Unit, flanked by two federal marshals and Chief Arthur Vance.
"Serena Jenkins!" the lead officer bellowed, drawing his sidearm. "Get on the ground! Do it now!"
"No! Stay away from me!" Serena screamed, backing away into the living room, knocking over a glass lamp. "You don't know who I am! I'm Daniel Brooks’ wife! I have millions of dollars!"
"You're under arrest," the officer commanded, stepping forward with three men, sweeping her legs out from under her and pinning her face-down onto the carpet.
Steel handcuffs clicked around her wrists with a sharp, heavy snap.
Serena screamed and thrashed, her expensive silk blouse tearing against the floor as she was yanked up to her feet. As the officers dragged her toward the elevator, she saw Arthur Vance standing by the doors, his arms folded across his chest, watching her with a look of stone-cold satisfaction.
"Tell Daniel I'll kill him!" Serena shrieked, her voice echoing down the hotel corridor. "Tell him I'll ruin his life! I'll come back for those brats!"

Arthur stepped closer, looking into her bloodshot, crazy eyes.
"You're never seeing the sun again, Serena," Arthur whispered softly. "Mr. Brooks made sure of it."
