Chapter 6 - The Unraveling Web
By 11:30 AM, the atmosphere in downtown Chicago was electric with tension.
Inside the high-security conference room of the State District Attorney’s office, Daniel sat beside Marcus Vance. Across the long glass table sat District Attorney Evelyn Thorne, flanked by two senior investigators from the Child Protective Services special task force.
On the wall-mounted screen, the audio recording from Daniel’s phone played through high-definition speakers.
The sound of the wooden hanger striking Noah’s shoulders, Serena’s vicious screaming, and Ava’s desperate cries echoed through the room. DA Thorne sat with her hands interlocked, her face turning darker with every passing second.
"That's enough," DA Thorne commanded, signaling her assistant to pause the audio.
She turned to Daniel, her eyes filled with deep professional respect and fierce outrage. "Mr. Brooks, the pediatric medical reports provided by Dr. Reynolds show a clear, undeniable pattern of physical abuse spanning at least three months."
"That's not all, Madam DA," Marcus Vance spoke up, sliding a thick blue folder across the table. "Our private investigators conducted a deep background audit on Serena’s history prior to her marriage to Mr. Brooks fourteen months ago."
DA Thorne opened the folder, her eyebrows rising instantly. "What is this?"
"Her real name isn't Serena Thorne," Marcus explained. "It’s Serena Jenkins. Six years ago, she served twenty-four months in a federal facility in Oregon for insurance fraud and grand larceny under a previous alias. She altered her identity using a forged birth certificate issued out of a corrupt municipal office in Florida."
Daniel leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table. "She didn't just marry me for money, DA Thorne. She was systematically siphoning funds from my family trust through a fake offshore charity account registered under her maiden name. When my children began noticing her secret phone calls, she started physically abusing them to keep them quiet."
DA Thorne stood up, slamming her leather binder shut.

"Sergeant!" she called out to the lead investigator standing near the door. "Issue an emergency felony arrest warrant for Serena Jenkins, alias Serena Brooks. Charges: felony child abuse, aggravated assault on a minor, corporate fraud, and identity falsification. Set bail at zero."
"She’s currently at the Grand Regent Hotel in room 1402," Daniel provided calmly. "My security team has had her under twenty-four-hour surveillance since she left my property."
