Chapter 13 - The Shadow on the Ridge

Back at the Calderón estate, the air was tense. The southern irrigation block had been isolated, and Mateo’s team was working around the clock, using a proprietary organic neutralizing agent that Álvaro had rushed in from a research lab in France. It was a race against time, and every hour counted.
But the physical threat was only half the problem. Álvaro knew that Veronica’s sabotage required insider knowledge. Someone within the estate had helped Hector Ganz bypass the security sensors.
That night, the sky over the Castilian hills was pitch black, a thick blanket of clouds hiding the stars. Álvaro sat in the security control room of the villa, the blue light of the monitors reflecting off his sharp features. Beside him stood Lara, a former military intelligence specialist he had hired to overhaul the estate's security.
"We ran a diagnostic on the system logs from the night of the breach," Lara said, tapping her fingers on the keyboard. "The motion sensors on the reservoir ridge didn't fail, Álvaro. They were placed on a diagnostic loop. For exactly twelve minutes, the system projected a pre-recorded feed from the previous night."
"Who had access to the override codes?" Álvaro asked.
"Only four people," Lara replied, pulling up a list of names. "You, your mother, Mateo, and... Tomás."
Tomás was the estate’s lead mechanic. He had worked for the Calderóns for five years. His wife was currently undergoing expensive medical treatment in Madrid, a detail that Álvaro had quietly funded out of his own pocket. It was hard to believe Tomás would betray them.
"Where is Tomás now?" Álvaro asked, his voice tightening.
"He checked out of his shift two hours ago, but his truck is still parked near the maintenance barn," Lara said. "And his phone GPS is active... near the old abandoned stone chapel on the eastern boundary."
The old chapel was a ruin, a relic of the seventeenth century that sat on the edge of the Calderón property line, overlooking a deep ravine. It was the perfect place for a clandestine meeting.
Álvaro didn't hesitate. "Stay here, Lara. Monitor the cameras. If anyone else moves on this property, alert me immediately."
"Take a weapon, Álvaro," Lara warned, reaching for a drawer.
"No," Álvaro said, his eyes cold. "If Tomás is betraying us, I want to look him in the eyes as a landlord, not an executioner. He needs to know what he has thrown away."
Slipping into the dark, cold night, Álvaro navigated the rocky paths of the estate with the ease of a man who had grown up on this land. The wind howled through the canyons, drowning out the sound of his footsteps.
As he approached the ruins of the chapel, he saw the faint, flickering glow of a flashlight inside the roofless stone structure. He crept closer, his back against the rough stone wall, listening.
"I can't do this anymore, Hector," a voice said—it was indeed Tomás, his voice trembling with fear and guilt. "They’ve isolated the southern block. Álvaro is already investigating the security breach. He’s going to find out it was me."
"You’ll do exactly what you’re told, Tomás," a cold, harsh voice replied. It was Hector Ganz, Veronica’s ruthless chief of security. "We paid for your wife’s treatment, didn't we? If you stop now, not only does the money dry up, but the medical board in Madrid might just receive a tip about the... fraudulent credentials of her specialist. She’ll be out of that clinic by tomorrow morning."
"You’re monsters," Tomás sobbed.
"We are businessmen," Hector sneered. "Now, give me the access codes to the western bottling plant. We need to ensure the next shipment is... compromised before it leaves the valley."

Hearing enough, Álvaro stepped out of the shadows, his massive frame filling the arched doorway of the chapel. The flashlight beam swung toward him, illuminating his face, which looked as hard and unforgiving as the stone surrounding them.
"The meeting is adjourned," Álvaro said, his voice dropping like an anvil in the quiet chapel.
