Chapter 15 - The Snake's Venom

The next morning, the estate was quiet, but it was the silence of a battlefield after the first charge.
Álvaro sat in his study, reviewing the digital ledger he had secured from Diego de la Vega. The evidence was overwhelming. It documented systematic corporate espionage, bribery of local officials, and illegal chemical purchases spanning five years. It was more than enough to put Veronica away for a decade.
But a sudden, sharp knock on the door interrupted his thoughts. Lara entered, her face pale, holding her tablet.
"Álvaro, we have a security alert," she said, her voice shaking slightly. "The medical clinic in Madrid where Tomás’s wife is staying... she was checked out two hours ago by a private security firm. Not our people. Not her family."
Álvaro stood up so fast his chair tipped over. "Veronica."
"And that’s not all," Lara continued, her fingers flying over the screen. "A private vehicle just breached our main gate. They didn't sneak in. They drove straight through the barrier. It’s Veronica’s Mercedes."
Álvaro walked out of the villa, his face a mask of cold fury. As he reached the courtyard, he saw the sleek black sedan parked near the rose garden.
The rear door opened, and Veronica stepped out. She wore a pristine white designer suit, her dark hair pulled back in a severe, perfect bun. She looked like a woman who was completely in control, but Álvaro could see the subtle tension in her jaw, the slight tremor in her hands. She was desperate.
Sofia stood by her rosebushes, her pruning shears in her hand, watching the intruder with an icy, aristocratic calm.
"Veronica," Sofia said, her voice carrying a quiet dignity that filled the entire courtyard. "You are trespassing on sacred ground."
"This ground is only sacred because of the blood I let you keep, Sofia," Veronica sneered, walking toward her. "But it seems your son has forgotten his place. He has been playing detective in Madrid. He has been making threats."
Álvaro stepped between them, his massive frame completely shielding his mother from Veronica’s sight. "The game is over, Veronica. The Guardia Civil has the ledger. Your assets are being frozen as we speak. By noon, you won't even have enough money to pay your lawyers."
Veronica stopped, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Álvaro. She didn't look defeated; she looked like a gambler who had just laid down her final, lethal card.
"You think a few financial files can destroy me, Álvaro?" she whispered. "I have survived three husbands and two corporate hostile takeovers. I don't lose. And right now, I hold the life of Tomás’s wife, Maria, in my hands. She is currently in a private facility in the northern mountains. If I do not call my people every hour to confirm I am safe, the oxygen in her room... goes off."
Sofia gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "You monster... she is an innocent woman!"
"Innocence is a luxury for the weak, Sofia," Veronica said, her voice dripping with venom. "I want the ledger back, Álvaro. I want the backups destroyed. And I want the deed to the northern three hundred acres of this valley transferred to my name by sunset. If you refuse, Maria dies. And I will make sure the blame falls squarely on your head."
Álvaro looked at her, his mind racing. He had planned for every corporate maneuver, every tactical threat, but he had underestimated the sheer, psychopathic desperation of his enemy.

"You have until five o'clock, Álvaro," Veronica said, turning back toward her car. "I will be waiting at the old winery ruins on the northern ridge. Come alone with the documents. If I see a single police car, or if Lara tries to track my phone, the call to Maria's clinic won't be made."
She stepped into her car, and the Mercedes sped away, leaving a cloud of dust that hung in the warm spring air.
