Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of the Lie

Veronica jumped out of her chair so violently her water glass overturned, the liquid pooling across the ancient oak table. "Turn that off!" she shrieked, her hand pointing wildly at the screen. "Álvaro, you pathetic coward! What is this fabrication? This is a distorted, edited piece of garbage! You are using an internal domestic dispute to humiliate me?!"

"Fabrication?" I asked, my voice remaining completely calm, my fingers resting lightly on the table. "Let’s look at the next file."

I pressed the button again.

The screen shifted to a recording from May 3rd. The garden steps. The video showed Veronica walking behind my mother as she carried a basket of clean laundry. With a swift, deliberate movement of her arm, Veronica shoved the eighty-year-old woman down the three stone steps into the gravel path. My mother lay there for four minutes, unable to stand, while Veronica walked back into the villa without looking back.

"My God," whispered one of the female shareholders, her hand flying to her mouth, her eyes turning toward Veronica with an expression that could have frozen water. "This is monstrous. This is criminal assault."

"It is a lie!" Fernando Vega roared, standing up and slamming his fist onto the table, his gold rings rattling against the wood. "Álvaro, you are attacking my daughter’s character because you cannot handle the business negotiations! We will sue you for defamation! We will pull our logistics network out of this valley by noon!"

"You cannot pull your logistics network out, Fernando," I said, clicking the remote one final time.

The video screen shifted, finally displaying the financial ledgers, but these were the certified forensic records from the Zurich holding escrow.

"Over the last eighteen months, your firm has diverted four point two million euros in Calderón capital through fraudulent invoices approved by your daughter," I stated, my voice echoing through the room like a judicial sentence. "I have already filed a formal complaint with the Madrid economic crimes unit. The state police are currently executing a search warrant at your corporate headquarters in the city. Your trucks haven't been stopped by an administrative glitch, Fernando. They have been seized as material evidence in a grand larceny investigation."

Fernando’s face went from ruddy confidence to a pale, sweating green. He looked at the financial numbers on the screen, then at the legal counsel sitting next to my mother, who was already signing a series of formal arrest authorizations. He slowly sank back into his chair, his large hands trembling, the gold rings suddenly looking like heavy brass weights.

Veronica looked around the table, her eyes searching the faces of the shareholders she had spent years trying to impress. But she found no allies there. She found only the cold, unyielding wall of the old money—the families who valued lineage, respect, and the land above all else.

"Juana!" Veronica screamed toward the doors, calling for her house manager. "Call the security! Get these people out of our house!"

The doors opened, but it wasn't Juana who stepped into the room. It was two officers from the Guardia Civil, accompanied by Manuel, our head cellarmaster.

"Senora Veronica Vega," the lead officer said, stepping forward with a leather folder. "You are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, and second-degree domestic assault. Please step away from the table."
