Chapter 16 - The Northern Ridge

The old winery ruins on the northern ridge were a haunting reminder of the Calderón family's humbler beginnings. It was a crumbling stone structure, built into the side of a steep cliff, surrounded by wild, untamed vines that had been abandoned decades ago.
The wind here was fierce, blowing off the Castilian plateau with a dry, cold force.
At exactly four-thirty, Álvaro’s truck pulled up to the ruins. He stepped out, carrying a leather briefcase. His face was calm, but inside, his spirit was forged in steel. He had spent the last four hours coordinating with Lara, but they had to play this card perfectly. There was no room for error.
As he entered the roofless stone building, he saw Veronica standing near the edge of the cliff, her white suit contrasting sharply with the dark, weathered stone. Behind her stood Hector Ganz, his throat still bandaged from his encounter with Álvaro, his hand resting on the butt of his pistol.
"You’re early, Álvaro," Veronica said, her voice carrying over the howling wind. "I like punctual men. They are easier to manage."
"Where is Maria?" Álvaro asked, setting the briefcase on a flat stone block between them.
"She is safe. For now," Veronica replied, gesturing to Hector.
Hector stepped forward, opened the briefcase, and examined the documents inside. He pulled out a high-tech scanner, verifying the signatures on the deed transfer and the digital signatures on the hard drives containing the ledger backups.
"They’re authentic, Veronica," Hector said, nodding. "The encryption matches. The files have been removed from his secure server."
Veronica smiled, a cold, triumphant expression that made her look years older. "You see, Álvaro? In the end, you always bow. You are just a peasant with a historical name. You don't have the stomach to do what is necessary to survive."
"I did what was necessary to protect a life, Veronica," Álvaro said softly, his eyes locking onto hers. "But you made one fatal mistake."
Veronica’s smile faltered. "And what is that?"
"You assumed I came here to negotiate," Álvaro said.
Before Veronica could reply, a low, powerful hum vibrated through the air. From behind the ridge, two unmarked helicopters painted in the deep olive green of the Guardia Civil descended, their searchlights blinding the ruins.
At the same moment, the sound of heavy boots echoed from the stone entrance. A dozen tactical officers, led by Lara and a senior prosecutor from Madrid, entered the ruins, their weapons drawn.
"Federal agents! Drop your weapons!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.
Hector Ganz immediately raised his hands, realizing the battle was lost. But Veronica turned on Álvaro, her face twisted with a terrifying, primal rage.
"You fool!" she screamed. "I told you! If they take me, Maria dies!"
"Maria is already safe, Veronica," Álvaro said, his voice rising above the roar of the helicopter blades. "Lara didn't track your phone. We tracked the IP address of the medical server your private security team used to access her records. The Guardia Civil raided the facility in the northern mountains forty-five minutes ago. Maria is currently in a municipal hospital in Segovia, surrounded by federal marshals. She is safe. And you are done."
Veronica looked around, the cold reality of her defeat finally sinking in. The handcuffs clicked around her wrists, the white sleeves of her designer suit stained with the dust of the ruins.

As they led her away, she looked back at Álvaro, her eyes filled with a desperate, impotent hatred. But Álvaro didn't look back. He turned his face to the wind, feeling the clean, cold air of Castile wash over him.
The shadow had finally been lifted from the valley.
