Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush

The following morning at 9:00 AM, the emergency board meeting of Vanguard Logistics was in full swing.

Victor Vanguard—a fifty-five-year-old corporate raider with slicked-back silver hair and an impeccably tailored navy suit—sat at the head of the massive mahogany table on the fiftieth floor of the Vanguard Tower. He was smiling, swirling a glass of sparkling water, feeling invincible. By all accounts, Daniel Harrison should have been dead by yesterday evening. The police reports would have called it a tragic mechanical failure. Harrison Global would have plunged into chaos, and Vanguard would have swept in to absorb their shipping lanes for pennies on the dollar.

The heavy oak doors at the end of the boardroom suddenly burst open.

Victor frowned, looking up with an irritated scowl. "What is the meaning of this? This is a closed executive session—"

He stopped dead.

Walking through the double doors was not a cowering assistant or a security guard. It was Daniel Harrison.

Daniel looked immaculate, wearing a sharp charcoal suit, his stride calm, measured, and radiating absolute, lethal power. Behind him walked Marcus Vance carrying a heavy steel briefcase, and trailing quietly a few steps behind them, wearing her school uniform and clutching her repaired backpack, was Emily.

Gasps echoed around the boardroom. Several senior executives stood up in sheer panic.

"Daniel?" Victor stammered, his color draining instantly. "How... how are you here? The car..."

"The brakes, Victor?" Daniel asked smoothly, pulling out a chair at the center of the table and sitting down without an invitation. "Ah, yes. Jack Miller and David Cole send their regards. They are currently enjoying the hospitality of the Chicago Police Department's federal holding cells."

Victor’s hands trembled slightly, though he forced a brittle, nervous smile onto his face. "You're delusional, Harrison. I have no idea what you're talking about. Disgruntled employees going rogue—it happens to every large firm. You can't possibly link—"

"Marcus," Daniel interrupted, not even looking at Victor. "Play track one."

Marcus stepped forward, opened the steel briefcase, and connected a sleek portable speaker to the boardroom's master audio system.

The room went dead silent as the speakers crackled to life.

Victor Vanguard’s voice filled the room, crystal clear, echoing off the mahogany walls:

“...I don't care how you do it. Make it look like an accident. Harrison needs to be out of the picture before the government contracts are awarded on Friday. Use the Southside contractors. Make sure the brake line is compromised...”

The audio played for thirty seconds before Marcus hit the stop button.

Every eye in the boardroom turned toward the head of the table. Several board members visibly recoiled from Victor, their faces contorted with horror and disbelief.

"That... that's a deepfake!" Victor shrieked, slamming his hands onto the table and standing up, his face turning an ugly shade of purple. "Harrison hacked our systems! He's fabricating evidence to execute a hostile takeover!"

Daniel didn't raise his voice. He didn't slam his fists. He simply leaned back in his chair, crossed his legs, and looked at Victor the way a cat looks at a trapped mouse.

"You can call it a deepfake, Victor," Daniel said calmly. "You can tell that to the federal prosecutors who are currently securing search warrants for this entire building. Or you can explain it to the Securities and Exchange Commission when I freeze every single asset Vanguard Logistics owns by noon today."

Daniel slowly stood up, towering over the terrified executive.

"And there's one more thing," Daniel added, his voice dropping into a cold, lethal register. "You tried to kill a child. Because she happened to be standing where your little assassins thought no one could understand them."

Daniel stepped aside, gesturing gently to Emily, who stood quietly near the door, her dark eyes fixed on Victor Vanguard with unshakeable courage.

"Meet Emily Chen," Daniel said softly. "The girl who outsmarted your entire corporate empire."
