Chapter 9 - Roots and Wings

The flight across the Pacific was smooth and peaceful. When the Gulfstream touched down at Shanghai Pudong International Airport, the humid summer air of China rushed in to greet them.
Over the next five days, Emily acted as Daniel’s personal tour guide through the bustling, vibrant streets of Shanghai. They walked along the historic Bund, watching the massive cargo ships glide down the majestic waters of the Huangpu River. They wandered through narrow, cobblestone alleyways in the old French Concession, finding the exact tea shop where Emily’s grandmother had bought her favorite jasmine leaves sixty years ago.
On the fourth afternoon, they visited a quiet, serene Buddhist temple nestled under the shade of ancient banyan trees.
Emily knelt on the polished stone floor in front of the altar, lighting a bundle of incense sticks and placing them carefully into the bronze burner. Daniel stood quietly behind her, his hands folded respectfully, watching the wisps of grey smoke curl up toward the carved wooden beams.
"What did you tell her?" Daniel asked softly as they walked out into the sunlit temple courtyard.

"I told her that I found a home," Emily said, looking up at him with a radiant, peaceful smile. "And I told her that you take very good care of me."
Daniel felt a lump form in his throat. He reached down, taking her small hand in his, squeezing it gently. "I always will, Emily. That's a promise that can never be broken."
