Chapter 7 - Whispers in the Wind

Spring arrived in Chicago with an explosion of green leaves and warm, fragrant breezes.
The penthouse suite was filled with the sound of laughter. Emily sat cross-legged on the rug in the expansive living room, surrounded by history and geography textbooks, while a private tutor helped her review for her upcoming final exams.
Daniel sat at his glass desk across the room, reviewing the quarterly philanthropic allocations for the foundation. Every few minutes, he would glance up from his tablet just to watch her—to make sure she was real, that the nightmare of that rainy night six months ago was truly a thing of the past.
His phone buzzed on the desk.
It was Marcus Vance. Daniel tapped the screen and accepted the encrypted call.
"Mr. Harrison," Marcus's voice came through the speaker. "The final asset liquidation of Vanguard Logistics is complete. All remaining funds have been successfully transferred to the Chen-Harrison Foundation accounts."
"Very good, Marcus," Daniel replied, leaning back in his leather chair. "Any residual activity from Vanguard loyalists?"
"None, sir," Marcus assured him. "The entire network has been dismantled. They're ghosts."
"Good. Take the rest of the week off, Marcus. You've earned it."
"Thank you, sir."
Daniel hung up and stood, walking over to the snack bar to pour a cup of fresh green tea—a habit he had picked up from Emily, who insisted it was better for focus than coffee.
He walked over to the study area, setting the cup down gently beside Emily's notebooks.
"Time for a five-minute break, Professor," Daniel smiled, pulling up a chair beside her.
Emily looked up, stretching her arms above her head with a yawn. "My brain is full of history dates."
"History is important," Daniel teased gently. "Especially the part where you outsmarted a multi-billion-dollar cartel."
May you like
Emily giggled. "Nai Nai always said history is just stories people haven't finished telling yet."
"She was right," Daniel said softly, looking at her with a profound, unshakeable devotion. "And our story is just getting started."
