Chapter 8 - The Shanghai Promise

Summer arrived with brilliant sunshine reflecting off the deep blue waters of Lake Michigan.
On a Saturday morning in late July, a private Gulfstream jet sat on the tarmac at O'Hare International Airport, its engines idling with a low, steady hum.
Daniel and Emily stood by the boarding stairs, accompanied by Marcus Vance and a handful of trusted security personnel.
"Are you ready for your first international flight, Emily?" Daniel asked, adjusting the collar of her light summer jacket.
"Ready!" Emily beamed, holding her small carry-on bag tight. "Are we really going to Shanghai?"
"We are," Daniel smiled, taking her hand. "We're going to visit the old neighborhood where your grandmother grew up. We're going to see the Huangpu River, eat authentic soup dumplings, and lay flowers at the memorial temple she used to talk about."
Tears of pure happiness glistened in Emily’s eyes. She launched herself into Daniel’s arms, burying her face against his chest. "Thank you, Dad."
"Thank you for finding me in the rain, sweetheart," Daniel whispered, kissing the top of her head.

They climbed the stairs together, stepping into the cabin of the private jet. As the heavy cabin door sealed shut, locking out the noise of the world, the plane taxied down the runway and lifted gracefully into the brilliant blue sky.
Far below them, the city of Chicago shrank into a patchwork of glass and steel, but inside the cabin, there was only warmth, family, and a future as bright as the morning sun.
