Chapter 10 - The Yellow Door

Six months later, summer had arrived in full bloom.
The lake glinted under a brilliant blue sky, reflecting the surrounding pine trees and the warm sunshine. Nestled on the hillside lot stood a magnificent, custom-built craftsman home—a blend of modern stone, warm timber, and expansive glass windows that brought the surrounding nature inside.
And right at the front entrance, standing out with vibrant, joyful warmth against the rich dark wood, was a bright yellow door.
Cars were parked along the gravel driveway. Music and laughter drifted from the backyard, where a small, intimate gathering of true friends—Julian, Denise, several team members, and local families—were celebrating.
In the backyard garden, colorful balloons floated above tables laden with delicious food and a multi-tiered wedding cake.
Ethan stood near the patio glass, wearing a relaxed linen shirt and tailored slacks, holding a glass of iced tea. Julian walked up beside him, clinking his glass against Ethan's.
"Not a bad turnout for a guy who used to spend his Christmases alone in a thirty-thousand-square-foot museum," Julian teased with a warm smile.
"I was an idiot back then," Ethan replied with a soft laugh. "I thought success was measured in market cap."
"And now?"
Ethan looked across the lawn.
Hannah was standing near the flower garden, wearing a light white sundress that caught the summer breeze. Her ring glinted in the sun, and her smile was radiant, free of the shadow of fear that had haunted her for five years. Beside her, Avery—dressed in a matching yellow sunsuit—was running through the lawn sprinklers, squealing with pure delight as she kicked water into the air.
"Now I know success is just keeping the people you love safe," Ethan said quietly.
Ethan walked down the patio steps and crossed the grass toward his wife and daughter. Seeing him approach, Avery giggled and ran right into his open arms. Ethan lifted her high into the air, making her roar with laughter before swinging her down into a warm embrace.
"Daddy, look! I found a ladybug!" Avery said proudly, holding out a tiny green leaf with a small red bug perched on it.
"That's amazing, sweetheart," Ethan smiled, kissing her forehead. "Show it to Miss Denise, okay?"
"Okay!" Avery ran off toward the patio where Denise was sitting.
Ethan stepped up behind Hannah, wrapping his arms around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder. Hannah leaned back against his chest, sighing with complete contentment.
"Happy?" Ethan asked softly in her ear.
Hannah reached up, touching his face, turning her head to give him a tender kiss on the lips.
"More than happy," Hannah murmured. "For five years, I kept that faded photograph in Avery’s mitten because it was the only proof I had that true love actually existed. I never dreamed that the man in that picture would come back and turn it into a reality."

Ethan took her hand, holding it tight as they watched their daughter playing in the sunshine of their home.
"We made a promise, Hannah," Ethan said, looking toward the house and the bright yellow door standing open to welcome their future. "When we build the real one, it gets a yellow door. And inside, we stay together forever."
