Chapter 8 - Unraveling the Web

Back in the executive suite at Sterling Global, Marcus Vance heard the sound of footsteps pounding up the stairwell outside the office. Sirens echoed faintly from the street forty floors below.
"What is that?" Vance growled, his attention flicking toward the hallway for a fraction of a second.
That split second was all Hannah needed.
With a surge of adrenaline borne of five years of suppressed rage, Hannah grabbed the heavy metal cleaning bucket off her cart and hurled it with all her strength at Vance’s legs. The soapy water and heavy plastic slammed into his shins, throwing him off balance.
The gun went off with a muffled THUD, the bullet tearing through the drywall harmlessly as Vance crashed to the floor.
Hannah didn't hesitate. She lunged toward the open safe, reached inside, and grabbed a thick leather ledger and a black USB drive labeled PROJECT MERCER.
Vance scrambled to his feet, wet and furious, reaching for her ankle. Hannah spun around and kicked him hard in the chest with her steel-toed work boot. Vance fell back, gasping for air.
Hannah scrambled out of the office and into the hallway just as six heavily armed federal agents and local police officers burst out of the emergency stairwell, guns raised.
"Federal agents! On the ground! Drop your weapon!" the lead agent screamed.
Vance raised his hands in surrender, coughing on the floor of the office, completely defeated.
Hannah sank against the hallway wall, clutching the ledger and the flash drive tightly against her chest, tears of sheer relief spilling down her cheeks.
Half an hour later, the police convoy arrived at Mercer Urban Systems headquarters.
In the boardroom, the tension was suffocating. Arthur Sterling and Victoria were surrounded by Mercer security guards, unable to leave the room as Julian presented digital evidence sent directly from the federal agents at Sterling HQ.
The boardroom doors opened, and Hannah walked in, flanked by two federal officers. She was disheveled, her uniform damp with cleaning water, but she walked with her head held high.
Ethan didn't care about the board members, the lawyers, or the millions of dollars hanging in the balance. He sprinted across the room and pulled Hannah into his arms, lifting her off her feet and holding her as if he would never let go again.
"Are you okay? Did he hurt you?" Ethan asked frantically, searching her face, his hands trembling.
"I'm okay," Hannah whispered, smiling through her tears. "I got it, Ethan. I got everything."
She handed the ledger and USB drive to Julian, who immediately plugged the drive into the boardroom system.
The main screens lit up with bank transfer logs, encrypted email threads, and audio files. Julian clicked on a file dated December 20, 2021.
The voice of Arthur Sterling filled the room, crystal clear:
"Make sure the audio deepfake of Ethan is convincing. Tell Richard Mercer his son will lose everything if he doesn't sign the proxy agreement. And buy off that girl’s mother’s medical board—make sure Hannah Brooks understands that staying in this city means her family dies."
The boardroom gasped in collective horror. Several board members looked at Arthur Sterling with utter disgust.
Victoria turned pale, shrinking back into her chair. "Father... what did you do?"
"Shut up, Victoria!" Arthur snarled, his cold demeanor finally cracking into pure desperation.
The lead federal officer stepped forward, pulling a pair of handcuffs from his belt. "Arthur Sterling, Victoria Sterling, you are under arrest for federal corporate conspiracy, extortion, wire fraud, and illegal surveillance. You have the right to remain silent."
As the handcuffs clicked onto Arthur’s wrists, he glared at Ethan with pure hatred. "You think you’ve won, Mercer? You ruined your company’s valuation! You’re finished on Wall Street!"

Ethan looked at Arthur, then took Hannah’s hand, lacing his fingers through hers.
"I didn't ruin my life, Arthur," Ethan said softly. "You just helped me realize what was actually worth saving."
