Chapter 4 - Hidden Threads

By 3:00 AM, the mansion was completely silent. Ethan had summoned his most trusted ally—Julian Vance, the Chief Legal Counsel for Mercer Urban Systems and Ethan's personal friend since law school.
Julian sat in Ethan's private study, surrounded by stacks of financial records and the covenant document Arthur Sterling had left behind. On the desk lay the faded photograph of Hannah and Ethan, alongside a voice recorder Julian had brought with him.
"This covenant is legally aggressive, Ethan," Julian said, running a hand through his hair. "Your father signed a series of cross-collateralized guarantees back in 2021. If Mercer Urban Systems fails to complete the merger with Sterling Global, Sterling holds the right to trigger an immediate call on your credit lines. They can effectively freeze your operating capital within forty-eight hours."
"I don't care about the company, Julian," Ethan said, pacing behind the desk. "I care about what they did to Hannah. I want to know how deep this goes. Arthur Sterling didn't seem surprised when I told him Avery was my daughter."
Hannah, who was sitting on the leather sofa drinking hot tea, leaned forward. "Julian... five years ago, when Richard Mercer came to my apartment, he had private security with him. But one of the men... he didn't act like a bodyguard. He was the one who handed Richard the envelope of cash and played the audio tape."
Ethan stopped pacing. "What did he look like?"
"He was tall, thin, with a prominent silver ring on his right pinky finger," Hannah remembered, her brow furrowed as she dredged up the painful memory. "He had a distinct scar across his left eyebrow."
Julian’s eyes widened. He immediately pulled out his laptop and typed rapidly. He turned the screen toward Hannah, displaying a security database profile. "Is this the man?"
Hannah gasped. "Yes! That’s him!"
Ethan stepped up to look at the screen. The profile belonged to Marcus Vance—no relation to Julian—a high-level corporate operative who had been on the payroll of Sterling Global for over a decade.
"He wasn't working for my father," Ethan realized, his blood running cold. "He was working for Arthur Sterling."
"Which means," Julian deduced, his legal mind racing, "Richard Mercer didn't initiate the buyout or the intimidation against Hannah. Arthur Sterling did. Arthur used your father’s declining health and corporate ambition to manipulate him, while simultaneously orchestrating the destruction of your personal life to force you into a marriage with Victoria."
"They forged the audio tape," Hannah said, realization dawning on her. "They used audio clips from Ethan's public speeches and corporate meetings to make it sound like he was rejecting me!"
"It’s worse than that," Julian said softly. He pulled up a confidential file from the deep servers of Mercer Urban Systems. "Look at the dates. Five years ago, the architecture firm Hannah was applying to for her fellowship—Vanguard Designs—was suddenly acquired by a subsidiary of Sterling Global three days before she was rejected."
Hannah felt a chill run down her spine. "I was told my portfolio wasn't good enough... that I had no future in the field."
"They systematically dismantled your life, Hannah," Ethan said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, gravelly register. "They destroyed your career, cut off your medical funding options, and forced you out of the city—all so Arthur Sterling could secure control of my company through his daughter."
A sudden knock at the study door interrupted them. Marcus, the butler, walked in, looking grave.
"Mr. Mercer, excuse me," Marcus said. "I thought you should see this immediately."
Marcus handed Ethan a tablet displaying an early edition of tomorrow’s tabloid newspaper. The front page featured a grainy, zoomed-in photograph of Hannah and Avery being escorted into the mansion, with the headline:
"BILLIONAIRE ETHAN MERCER'S SECRET MAID & BASTARD CHILD: A HOLIDAY SCANDAL THREATENS MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR MERGER!"
"Victoria," Hannah whispered, her hand flying to her mouth. "She leaked it to the press."
"She’s trying to force your board of directors to remove you before the merger vote," Julian warned. "If the board decides you are a liability to the stock price, they can invoke Clause 9 of your corporate charter and strip you of your voting rights as CEO."
Ethan looked at the headline, then looked at Hannah, whose eyes were filled with tears of shame and panic.
"They think they can play dirty?" Ethan said, setting the tablet down on his desk with terrifying calm. "They think they can brand my daughter a scandal and the woman I love a threat?"
He turned to Julian. "Call an emergency meeting of the Board of Directors for tomorrow morning at 9:00 AM. Tell them I will be making a personal address."

"Ethan, if you attack Sterling publicly without concrete proof of fraud, the board will vote you out," Julian warned.
"Then we’re going to find that proof," Ethan declared. "And we have thirty hours to do it."
