Chapter 5 - The War Room

By morning, the Mercer estate was surrounded by paparazzi and news vans. Long-lens cameras flashed against the frosted glass of the front gates, eager to catch a glimpse of the "secret maid" who had thrown the business world into chaos.
Inside the mansion, Ethan had converted the library into a war room. Laptops, files, and financial charts covered the ancient mahogany tables. Avery was in the adjacent playroom with Denise—the kind staff member who had taken care of her the previous evening—unaware of the storm brewing outside.
Ethan, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit, stood in front of a white board.
"Arthur Sterling’s weakness is his greed," Ethan said to Julian and Hannah. "He didn't just want Mercer Urban Systems; he wanted full control of our proprietary smart-city infrastructure technology. That’s why he pushed for this merger."
"If we can prove he committed corporate espionage and blackmailed Hannah to influence the company’s trajectory, the covenant he signed with your father becomes legally void under the Fraudulent Inducement Act," Julian explained. "But we need hard evidence. Marcus Vance—Sterling's operative—isn't going to just sign a confession."
"He might if he thinks he’s about to go to prison alone," Hannah said suddenly.
Ethan and Julian turned to her.
"What do you mean, Hannah?" Ethan asked.
"When I was working for the catering agency over the past month, I was assigned to clean the executive suites at Sterling Global’s downtown office twice," Hannah revealed. "I saw Marcus Vance there. He keeps a personal safe in the secondary office behind the main boardroom. He’s paranoid. He writes down every transaction, every payoff, because he knows Arthur Sterling discards people when he's done with them."
Julian sat up straight. "If Vance kept records of the money paid to fabricate the audio tape or bribe the hospital staff who threatened your mother, that’s criminal extortion."
"The problem is accessing that safe," Ethan said. "Sterling Global’s headquarters is a fortress. Security is state-of-the-art."
"Not for someone who cleans it," Hannah said quietly. "I still have my access keycard for the weekend maintenance crew. They haven't revoked it yet because my shift was scheduled through an independent agency."
"No," Ethan said immediately, stepping forward. "Absolute not. I am not putting you in danger again, Hannah. Sterling’s people are dangerous."
"Ethan, look at me," Hannah said, taking his face in her hands. Her voice was firm, filled with a resolve he hadn't seen in five years. "For five years, I ran. I let fear rule every decision I made because I thought I was alone. But I'm not alone anymore. We are fighting for our daughter's future. I am not going to sit in this mansion while you lose everything because you're trying to protect me."
Ethan looked into her hazel eyes—the green flecks flashing with fiery determination. He realized then that the gentle girl he had fallen in love with had grown into an indomitable force.
"If you go in," Ethan said, "I'm going with you."
"You can't, Ethan," Julian interjected. "You have the emergency board meeting at 9:00 AM. You need to keep Arthur Sterling and Victoria occupied in front of the board so they don't realize what’s happening at their headquarters."
"Julian’s right," Hannah said. "You play the distraction. Face the board, hold the line, and buy me time. I'll get into the office with Julian’s tech team monitoring my feed."

Ethan pulled Hannah into his arms, holding her close, burying his face in her hair. "If anything happens to you—"
"It won't," Hannah whispered back, hugging him tight. "We’re going to build that real house, Ethan. The one with the yellow door. I'm not letting anyone take that away from us again."
