Chapter 2 - Shadows of the Past

The private suite on the third floor was a stark contrast to the chaotic service hallways Hannah was used to. High ceilings, plush velvet couches, and a roaring marble fireplace warmed the spacious room. Avery was fast asleep on a king-sized sofa, wrapped in a cashmere throw, a half-eaten plate of gingerbread cookies resting on the coffee table beside her.

Hannah sat on the edge of an armchair, her fingers twisted together nervously. Five years of running, five years of struggling to pay rent, of taking double shifts at diners and cleaning services—all to protect the little girl sleeping peacefully a few feet away. And now, she was in the lion's den.

The heavy oak doors clicked open, and Ethan walked in. He had discarded his tuxedo jacket and unbuttoned his top collar, rolling up his sleeves. He looked exhausted, but his eyes were alive with an intense, burning determination.

He closed the door behind him, locking out the noise of the party downstairs, which was finally winding down.

"She looks like you," Ethan said softly, walking over to look down at Avery. "Except for her eyes."

Hannah’s heart pounded against her ribs. "She has my mother's eyes," she lied quickly, instinctively.

Ethan turned to face her, folding his arms across his chest. "Don't lie to me, Hannah. Not anymore. I spent five years believing you walked away from me because I wasn't enough for you. Because I was too obsessed with building Mercer Urban Systems to give you the life you wanted."

"That’s what you thought?" Hannah asked, a faint, bitter laugh escaping her lips. "You thought I left because of money?"

"What else was I supposed to think?" Ethan demanded, his voice dropping into a desperate whisper. "I came home to our apartment on a rainy Tuesday evening, and everything you owned was gone. No note. No phone call. Your number was disconnected. I spent six months looking for you! I hired private investigators, I called every hospital, every architecture firm in the tri-state area. It was as if Hannah Brooks had vanished off the face of the earth!"

Hannah stared at him in disbelief, tears brimming in her eyes. "You searched for me?"

"Of course I searched for you!" Ethan shouted, stepping closer. "I loved you! I was going to propose to you that weekend! I had the ring in my pocket!"

Hannah buried her face in her hands, a choked sob escaping her throat. "They told me... they told me you paid them to make me go away."

Ethan froze. The room seemed to plunge into an arctic chill. "What did you just say?"

Hannah lifted her head, her face pale, tears streaming down her cheeks. "Five years ago, two days before I disappeared... your father came to the apartment."

Ethan’s chest tightened. "My father? Richard Mercer?"

"He brought two men in suits," Hannah continued, her voice trembling as the memories flooded back. "He sat down in our kitchen and threw an envelope full of cash onto the table. He told me that I was a distraction—that your tech startup was on the verge of securing a fifty-million-dollar buyout, but the investors didn't want a CEO tied down to a penniless, middle-class architecture student. He said you had agreed to a deal with Arthur Sterling, and part of that deal was an arrangement with his daughter, Victoria."

Ethan felt as if the floor had dropped out from beneath him. "My father told you that?"

"I didn't believe him at first," Hannah sobbed. "I told him you loved me. But then he played an audio recording... it was your voice, Ethan. You were talking to your father, saying that I was 'holding you back' and that you needed to 'cut ties before the Sterling merger was finalized'."

"That’s impossible!" Ethan roared, slamming his fist onto the edge of the mantlepiece. "I never said that! I never talked to my father about you in that way! He hated that I was building my own company instead of joining his firm!"

"The recording sounded real, Ethan!" Hannah cried out softly, mindful not to wake Avery. "And then... then your father threatened me. He said if I didn't take the money and leave the state immediately, he would use his influence to revoke my mother’s medical care at the university hospital. She was dying of cancer, Ethan! I couldn't risk her life!"

Ethan stood frozen, horror washing over him in waves. The pieces of a nightmare puzzle were finally fitting together. Five years ago, his late father, Richard Mercer, had been desperate to force Ethan back into the corporate fold, aligning Mercer Enterprises with the powerful Sterling Global empire.

"My father died three years ago," Ethan whispered, his voice cracking. "He took that secret to his grave."

"He told me if I ever contacted you again, he would ruin my family," Hannah said, her voice dropping to a fragile murmur. "A week after I left, I found out I was pregnant with Avery. I was terrified, Ethan. I had no money, no degree, and no way to reach you without risking everything. So I ran. I moved from city to city, taking under-the-table jobs, doing whatever it took to keep Avery safe."

Ethan stepped toward her, his eyes filled with overwhelming remorse. "Hannah... Avery is four years old."

May you like

Hannah swallowed hard, unable to meet his gaze.

"Is she mine?" Ethan asked, his voice shaking with a terror and hope he had never experienced before. "Hannah, look at me. Is Avery my daughter?"
