Chapter 2 - The Sieged Sanctuary

Matteo didn't panic. He slowly stood up, smoothing the front of his tailored vest, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure obsidian.

"So, Moretti realized he made a mistake," Matteo mused dryly. "He saw Liana’s reaction, realized the truth was out, and ran to his handlers."

"They know Nico isn't your biological child, Don Matteo," Marcus added, stepping into the room and locking the thick oak doors behind him. "If the Donati family proves to the Syndicate Council that the Varric bloodline is extinct and that you are raising a commoner's bastard as your heir, your authority over Valecroft will be challenged legally within the underworld."

Liana held Nico closer, pulling him against her neck. "They want to take him away? They want to kill him?"

"No one is touching a single hair on his head," Matteo promised, turning to face her. The warmth he had shown moments ago vanished, replaced by the terrifying aura of the Caporegime who ruled Valecroft through blood and fear. "Liana, go upstairs to the safe room behind the master suite. Marcus will post four men outside the door."

"I am not leaving your side," Liana said fiercely, standing up with Nico balanced securely in her arms. "I lost my husband to illness four months ago. I thought I lost my son twenty-two days ago. I will not hide in a closet while men fight over my child."

Matteo stared at her, caught off guard by the sheer defiance in her voice. For the first time, he noticed that beneath her faded pink maid’s uniform and pale, grief-stricken face lay a strength forged in the fires of unimaginable tragedy.

"This is not a debate, Liana," Matteo growled softly. "Donati’s men carry automatic weapons."

"And I carry a mother’s instinct," she shot back without flinching. "Give me a gun."

Marcus cleared his throat nervously, looking between his terrifying boss and the grieving mother holding the Varric family’s future. "Don Matteo... she has a point. If Donati breaches the courtyard, the safest place for the child is in the underground vault, not the upper levels. The basement tunnels lead straight to the docks."

Matteo held Liana’s gaze for three long seconds. Finally, he gave a curt nod. He reached into his shoulder holster, pulled out a compact, lightweight firearm, engaged the safety, and handed it to her butt-first.

"Do you know how to use this?" Matteo asked.

"My father was a border guard," Liana replied flatly, taking the weapon with a practiced grip. "I know where to shoot."

"Good," Matteo said, a faint, dangerous smirk touching his lips. "Follow Marcus to the lower vaults. If anyone other than me opens that door... clear the chamber."

Outside, the first sharp crack of gunfire shattered the rain-soaked night. Heavy glass shattered on the ground floor, followed by the deep, thunderous roar of the mansion’s automated security systems engaging.

"Move!" Marcus barked.

Liana followed Marcus down the hidden spiral staircase concealed behind a floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. Down into the cool, damp earth beneath the mansion they descended, the distant sounds of shouting, gunfire, and shattering stone echoing from above.

Nico began to cry again, frightened by the muffled explosions detonating near the outer gates. Liana tucked his head under her chin, whispering sweet, rhythmic lullabies into his ear while navigating the dimly lit concrete corridors.

"Right through here, Miss Graves," Marcus said, keying a digital code into a heavy vault door at the end of the hall. "This bunker was built during the territory wars of '98. It has independent air filtration, thick steel walls, and food for a month."

As the vault door hummed open, a sudden shadow detached itself from the gloom behind them.

A gunshot echoed through the narrow tunnel. Marcus gasped, stumbling forward as a bullet grazed his shoulder, dark crimson blooming across his white shirt.

Liana spun around, raising her gun instantly.

Standing ten feet away, dripping wet and holding a silenced pistol, was Dr. Enzo Moretti.
