Chapter 5 - The Velvet Cage

"Your wife?" Liana echoed, her voice barely a whisper in the silent vault. "Are you out of your mind?"
"It is the only logical solution," Matteo said smoothly, though his eyes held an undercurrent of raw vulnerability. "If we announce our marriage, it explains why you were brought into the mansion. We tell the Syndicate that you were my late wife’s closest confidante, that we were married in secret to protect the child from Donati's assassins. It legalizes your presence, gives you absolute immunity under mafia law, and secures Nico’s position as the sole heir to the Varric empire."
"I am a mechanic's widow!" Liana said, standing up with Nico, her eyes wide with disbelief. "I do not belong in your world of blood, luxury, and betrayal! I don't want an empire for my son, Matteo! I just want him to be safe!"
"And where will he be safer than behind my walls, guarded by two hundred men?" Matteo countered, standing up to meet her gaze. "Liana, look at the reality of your situation. You have no money. Your home in the lower district was burned by Donati’s men two hours ago—my scouts just confirmed it."
Liana paled. "My house... my husband's shop..."
"They burned it to leave you with nowhere to run," Matteo said softly, taking a step toward her. "If you walk out of these gates, Donati’s surviving loyalists will hunt you down to silence you. In their eyes, you are the key witness who can destroy their narrative. Stay here. Let me protect you both."
Liana sank back onto the sofa, holding Nico close to her pounding heart. She looked around the vault—a gilded cage built beneath a fortress of violence. She had spent her entire life as an honest, working-class woman, avoiding the shadow of the Valecroft mafia. Now, she was being asked to step into the very center of the web.
"What kind of marriage would it be?" Liana asked quietly, looking up at him.
"A contract," Matteo replied without hesitation. "In name only. You will have your own private wing in the mansion. You will have complete freedom over Nico’s upbringing, access to unlimited funds, and the full military protection of the Varric family. In return, you play the role of my loyal wife when the Syndicate Council meets."
Liana stared at the dangerous, powerful man standing before her. She remembered how he had looked in the foyer the night before—barefoot, exhausted, weeping silently for a dead child while holding her living one. Beneath the cold demeanor of a mob boss, she saw a man who was fighting for survival just as fiercely as she was.
"If I agree," Liana said slowly, "I want three conditions."
"Name them," Matteo said.
"First, Nico will know the truth about his biological father when he grows up. You will not erase my late husband’s memory."
"Agreed," Matteo said instantly.
"Second, no decisions regarding his health, education, or safety will be made without my explicit consent."
"Agreed."
"Third," Liana said, looking directly into his dark eyes, "if there ever comes a day when the danger has passed and I want to leave... you will let us go without bloodshed."
May you like
Matteo’s jaw flexed. For a fraction of a second, something dark and unreadable flickered in his eyes—a reluctance that surprised even him. But he gave a slow, deliberate nod.
"You have my word as a Varric," Matteo promised. "Now, come upstairs. The rain has stopped, and we have a wedding to arrange."
