Chapter 4 - The Aftermath of Fire

Three hours passed in the quiet dark of the vault before the external speaker chimed.

"Liana. Marcus. Open the door."

It was Matteo’s voice. It was tired, hoarse, but undeniably alive.

Marcus keyed the release sequence. The heavy vault door unsealed with a hiss of compressed air, sliding back to reveal Matteo standing in the hallway.

He was covered in soot, gunsmoke, and blood. His crisp white shirt was torn, his coat gone, but his tall frame remained unbowed. Behind him stood a dozen of his most elite soldiers, their weapons lowered, their faces grim.

Matteo’s eyes immediately swept the room, ignoring the unconscious Dr. Moretti tied to a chair in the corner, bypassing Marcus, and settling entirely on Liana and the sleeping child in her arms.

He let out a long, shuddering breath, the tension leaving his broad shoulders.

"The Donati force has been eradicated," Matteo announced, his voice echoing softly in the chamber. "Donati himself was captured alive near the north perimeter. Valecroft is secured."

He stepped into the room, kneeling beside Liana’s sofa. He looked down at Nico, who was fast asleep, a drop of milk clinging to his tiny chin.

"Are you unharmed?" Matteo asked gently, reaching out a soot-stained finger to gently brush the baby’s hair back.

"We are fine," Liana said. "Dr. Moretti tried to take him. I shot him."

Matteo raised an eyebrow, a rare, genuine smile breaking through his dirt-streaked face. He looked over at Moretti, who was groaning as he regained consciousness in his bonds.

"You shot him?" Matteo asked, looking back at her.

"Twice," Marcus chimed in from the corner. "Once in the shoulder, once in the knee. The lady has remarkable recoil control, Don Matteo."

Matteo chuckled—a deep, rich sound that seemed completely out of place in the blood-soaked basement of a mafia estate. "It seems I hired the wrong security team. I should have placed you at the gates, Liana."

Liana didn't smile. She looked into Matteo’s dark eyes, her expression serious. "What happens now, Don Matteo? The truth is out. Nico is my biological son. He is not a Varric. His real name is Liam Graves."

The room grew very quiet. Marcus motioned for the soldiers to take the conscious, trembling Dr. Moretti out into the hallway, leaving Matteo, Liana, and the baby alone in the vault.

Matteo stood up, pacing slowly toward the center of the room before turning to face her.

"The Syndicate Council meets in three days," Matteo explained. "According to our ancient laws, if a Caporegime dies without a recognized legal heir, his territory and wealth are divided among his rivals. Donati launched tonight’s attack because he wanted to eliminate Nico before the meeting, forcing me to surrender my seat."

"Then tell them the truth," Liana urged. "Tell them Nico isn't your son."

"If I tell them that," Matteo warned, "I lose my legal standing as head of the family. The Varric territory will dissolve into a bloody civil war that will consume all of Valecroft. And worse... once the other families learn that Nico is just a helpless, common child with no mafia protection, he will become a target for every mercenary looking to weaken me."

Liana felt a cold terror grip her stomach. "So what are you saying?"

Matteo walked back to her, dropping to his knee once more, looking directly into her eyes with absolute intensity.

"I am saying that as far as the world is concerned, Nico is my son," Matteo declared softly. "And to protect him, you must stay in this mansion. Not as my maid. Not as a wet nurse."

Liana’s heart skipped a beat. "Then as what?"

"As my wife."
