Chapter 8 - The Fire in the Heart

Night fell over Valecroft.

The victory at the cathedral had been swift, decisive, and absolute. The Donati family had been dismantled, its remaining loyalists fleeing the city, leaving Matteo Varric as the undisputed, supreme ruler of the entire regional underworld.

Back at the Varric mansion, the grand dining hall was quiet.

A fire crackled in the massive stone hearth, casting warm, dancing orange light across the long dining table. Nico slept peacefully in his crib near the fireplace, untroubled by the storm of violence that had raged around his existence for the past four days.

Liana sat at the table, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater, sipping hot tea. The heavy emerald silk dress had been put away, but the silver emerald ring remained on her finger.

Matteo walked into the room, having stripped off his suit jacket and holster. He looked exhausted, but the tension that had gripped his face for months seemed to have finally vanished.

He poured himself a glass of whiskey, walked over to the hearth, and stood beside Nico’s crib, watching the baby sleep.

"You saved us today, Liana," Matteo said quietly, his voice lacking its usual cold authority. "If you hadn't spotted that pre-filled vial, Judge Vito would have forced the test, and Lucian would have taken control of the city."

"I spent three years working in pathology before I met my husband," Liana said softly, staring into her teacup. "I know what tainted chemical preservatives look like. I wasn't going to let that woman touch my son."

Matteo turned to look at her. "He really is your son, isn't he? In every way that matters."

"He is," Liana agreed, raising her eyes to meet his. "And what about you, Matteo? Now that the Donati family is gone and your control is absolute... what happens to our agreement?"

Matteo walked over to the table, taking a seat across from her. He set his whiskey glass down, his dark eyes studying her face with intense, quiet emotion.

"Our agreement was for a contract marriage," Matteo said slowly. "To protect you both until the danger passed."

"And the danger has passed," Liana pointed out softly, her heart beating strangely fast against her ribs. "You are supreme ruler of Valecroft now. No one will dare challenge you again."

Matteo leaned back in his chair, gazing into the roaring fire.

"I spent my entire life believing that strength meant standing alone," Matteo confessed, his voice barely above a whisper. "When Isabella died, I thought my heart died with her. I raised Nico—or the child I thought was Nico—out of duty, out of obligation to my family line. But when you walked through my doors six nights ago... everything changed."

Liana remained silent, holding her breath, listening.

"You didn't bow to my title," Matteo continued, looking back at her. "You didn't care about my money or my guns. You cared only about the child in my arms. You fought for him. You shot a man for him. You stood before the deadliest men in this city and exposed a lie without blinking an eye."

He reached across the table, placing his large, warm hand over hers.

"I don't want a contract marriage, Liana," Matteo said, his eyes filled with a raw, undeniable truth. "I don't want you to leave. I want you to stay... not because you have to, but because this mansion is no longer just a fortress. It is our home."

Liana looked down at his hand covering hers. She felt the warmth of his skin, the strength of a man who had built an empire, but also the gentle touch of a father who had wept in the dark for a lost child.

"I lost my husband, Matteo," Liana whispered, tears sparkling in her eyes. "I thought my life was over. I thought love was something I would only ever remember."

"So did I," Matteo murmured, leaning closer. "Perhaps... we were both given a second chance."
