Chapter 9 - The New Dawn

One year later.

Spring had arrived in Valecroft, turning the estate's vast gardens into a vibrant tapestry of blooming white roses, lavender, and lush green grass. The dark, rain-soaked nights of terror had faded into distant memories.

In the courtyard, a newly constructed playground stood under the shade of a ancient weeping willow tree.

Nico—now a healthy, energetic toddler with bright blue eyes and dark brown hair that was slowly darkening to match his late biological father's—was laughing joyfully as he chased a golden retriever puppy across the grass.

Sitting on a marble bench nearby was Liana. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her hair flowing freely over her shoulders, her face glowing with radiant health and genuine happiness. In her lap was a sketchbook, where she was drawing a portrait of her son playing in the sun.

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path.

Matteo walked into the courtyard. He was dressed in a simple linen shirt and slacks, having stepped away from his executive duties at the Varric Foundation—a newly established charitable trust that funded pediatric clinics and orphanages across the province.

"Is he still refusing his afternoon nap?" Matteo asked with a warm chuckle, sitting down beside Liana and wrapping an arm around her waist.

"He has too much energy," Liana replied, leaning her head against his shoulder. "He takes after his father."

"Which one?" Matteo asked softly, a gentle, teasing smile touching his lips.

Liana turned her head, kissing his cheek. "Both of them. He has his father David's bright eyes, and your impossible stubbornness."

Matteo laughed, pulling her closer, resting his hand gently over her stomach.

For two months, a new secret had been growing beneath the Varric mansion—a secret that brought not fear or bloodshed, but pure, unadulterated joy. Liana was four months pregnant with their second child—a baby girl.

"The doctor from the city hospital called today," Matteo informed her, his thumb gently caressing her waist. "The pediatric wing construction is complete. They want you to cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony next Tuesday."

"Only if you promise to hold Nico while I speak," Liana bargained playfully. "He likes to run onto the stage."

"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Matteo promised.

Across the lawn, Nico stumbled over his own feet, landing softly on the grass. He didn't cry. He looked up, saw his mother and father sitting together under the willow tree, and scrambled to his feet, running toward them as fast as his small legs could carry him.

"Mama! Papa!" Nico shouted, throwing his arms out wide.

Matteo scooped the boy up into his powerful arms, lifting him high into the air as Nico squealed with laughter, before settling him securely between himself and Liana.

Liana adjusted the small silver bracelet on Nico’s wrist—a new bracelet, engraved not with a mob symbol, but with two simple words: Forever Loved.

She looked at her son, then at Matteo, and finally out over the sunlit gardens of the estate that had once been a fortress of fear, but was now a sanctuary of life.

The grief that had brought her to the mansion gates in the rain was gone, replaced by a love that had transformed an empire forever.
