Chapter 1 - THE SPARK AND THE IRON

The hallway smelled of stale coffee and bleach. Three heavy plastic laundry baskets sat blocking the narrow space between the bedroom door and the kitchen. On top of the pile lay Frank Mercer’s oily work shirts, Brittany’s delicate lace tops, and Ryan’s sweaty gym clothes.

Diane Mercer stood beside the kitchen counter, holding a cup of black coffee. She didn't look like the tearful mother-in-law from the night before. She looked like a general inspecting a freshly conquered territory.

"The washing machine takes two hours per cycle," Diane said smoothly, not even offering a morning greeting. "You'll need to start Frank's work gear first. He leaves at seven-thirty. Wash them on hot, scrub the grease out by hand in the utility sink first, and don't touch my laundry detergent—yours is the blue bottle on the floor."

Claire looked at the mountain of clothes, then at Diane. "I'm not washing this."

Ryan emerged from the bedroom, bleary-eyed and rubbing his neck. "Claire, please. Just throw it in the machine. It takes five minutes to load."

"Then do it yourself," Claire replied coldly.

Frank Mercer walked out of his bedroom, his heavy work boots thudding against the hardwood floor. He took one look at the untouched laundry, then at Claire, who stood motionless in her jeans and a plain black t-shirt. His face flushed a dark, angry crimson.

"What did I tell you last night?" Frank roared, his voice shaking the thin walls of the condo. "In this house, when my wife gives an order, you do it! You're not special, girl!"

"I am not your servant, Frank," Claire said, her voice steady despite the adrenaline surging through her veins. "And I don't answer to your wife."

Frank took three large, menacing strides toward her. "You little mouthy bitch—"

"Frank!" Ryan said weakly, but he didn't move between them.

Frank grabbed the edge of the top laundry basket and dumped it out. A cascade of dirty clothes covered Claire's shoes.

"Pick it up!" Frank shouted, stepping into her personal space until his chest almost touched her shoulder. "Pick it up and get to the sink!"

"No," Claire said, looking him dead in the eye.

Crack.

The first slap caught Claire across her left cheek, sending a blinding sting across her face. Her head snapped sideways, her ear ringing from the force of the blow.

"Frank!" Diane gasped, though she didn't step forward.

Before Claire could even regain her footing, Frank stepped in again, his hand flying back.

Crack.

The second slap hit her right cheek, tearing the corner of her lip against her teeth. The metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.

"You do what you're told in my house!" Frank snarled, raising his fist.

Something inside Claire snapped. The fatigue, the humiliation, the months of quiet disrespect—all of it vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying clarity. She didn't cry. She didn't cower.

Beside the coat rack in the narrow entryway stood an old iron pry bar—a heavy, eighteen-inch solid metal tool Frank used to prop open the heavy garage door.

Claire lunged sideways, her fingers gripping the cold, solid steel of the metal bar. She swung it around with every ounce of strength in her body, holding it high between herself and Frank.

The heavy iron bar whistled through the air, stopping mere inches from Frank’s nose.

Frank froze. The rage on his face turned to instant shock as he stared at the cold metal bar held steadily by a woman whose eyes held no fear whatsoever.

"Touch me again," Claire whispered, her voice dropping into a dark, lethal register, "and I will tear this house apart piece by piece starting with your skull."

The hallway went dead silent. Brittany and Tyler had come out of their rooms, freezing in place at the sight of Claire holding the iron bar over their father.

"Claire! Put that down!" Ryan panicked, finally moving, but Claire pointed the tip of the iron bar directly at Ryan's chest.

"Don't take another step, Ryan," Claire warned, her eyes unblinking. "You stood there and watched your father hit your wife twice. You are dead to me."

She kept the iron bar raised, backing up slowly toward the front door. With her free hand, she reached behind her, grabbed her handbag and car keys from the table, and pulled the front door open.

"If any of you step onto the landing," Claire said, holding the iron bar firm, "I'll use this."

Frank swallowed hard, taking a step back. For the first time in his life, the neighborhood bully was terrified.

Claire stepped out into the stairwell, slammed the heavy door behind her, and locked herself into her car. As the engine roared to life, she wiped the trickle of blood from her lip, picked up her phone, and dialed Maya Collins.

"Maya," Claire said, her voice completely steady despite the trembling in her hands. "I need that attorney. Now."
