Chapter 4 - THE TRENCHES OF JUSTICE

Three weeks after the incident at the condo, the legal battle hit its full stride.

Claire had moved into a bright, secure one-bedroom apartment in the Lincoln Park neighborhood, funded by her recovered savings and her steady income as an account manager at a logistics firm. For the first time in months, she slept soundly, free from the constant walking-on-eggshells terror that had defined her short time with the Mercer family.

However, the Mercers were not going away quietly.

In a desperate bid to save face and retaliate, Frank Mercer hired a sleazy, high-conflict local attorney named Arthur Gable. Gable immediately filed a counter-suit against Claire, alleging that she had committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon—referring to the iron pry bar she had brandished—and demanded fifty thousand dollars in damages for "emotional distress" suffered by the Mercer family.

At the preliminary hearing in Cook County Court, Arthur Gable took the podium, slamming his fist against the wood.

"Your Honor!" Gable shouted, pointing a finger at Claire. "This woman entered my client's peaceful home, refused to engage in basic family duties, provoked a verbal dispute, and then drew a deadly steel weapon, threatening the lives of four innocent people! Mr. Frank Mercer was merely trying to disarm a violent, hysterical woman!"

Sarah Jenkins stood up slowly, her expression cool, professional, and entirely unbothered.

"Your Honor," Sarah began, clicking a remote control that activated the courtroom's visual presentation screens. "Opposing counsel's narrative is not only absurd, it is contradicted by medical evidence and police records."

Sarah brought up the emergency room medical report taken on the morning of the assault.

"My client suffered two distinct blunt-force facial traumas resulting in soft-tissue bruising, an inner-lip laceration, and minor neck sprain—injuries fully consistent with being struck twice by a full-grown man weighing over two hundred and twenty pounds," Sarah stated. "The iron bar was grasped purely in self-defense to prevent a third blow after Mr. Mercer trapped my client in a narrow hallway."

The judge, a stern female magistrate named Judge Patricia Vance, reviewed the medical photos on her screen. Her face hardened as she examined the deep red handprints on Claire's face.

"Furthermore," Sarah continued, "we have submitted a recorded voicemail left on my client's phone by Mr. Frank Mercer three hours after the incident."

Sarah pressed play on her tablet. Frank’s voice boomed through the quiet courtroom speakers:

“You think you’re smart calling the cops, Claire? I’ll make sure Ryan loses his job, and I’ll make sure everyone in Bridgeport knows what a worthless, crazy bitch you are! You drop the charges or I’ll ruin you!”

The gallery gasped. Frank sat at the defense table, his face turning gray as his own attorney winced in visible frustration.

Judge Vance slammed her gavel down.

"The motion to dismiss the protective order is denied," Judge Vance ruled sharply. "The order of protection against Frank Mercer is extended for two full years. Furthermore, based on the physical evidence and the recorded threat, I am referring this matter directly to the District Attorney's office for criminal prosecution of felony battery and witness intimidation."

Frank stood up in a panic. "Your Honor! You can't do this! She threatened me with an iron bar!"

"Sit down, sir!" Judge Vance barked. "One more word out of you and I will hold you in summary contempt of court right now. Court is adjourned."

Outside the courtroom, Ryan ran after Claire down the hallway. He looked pale, gaunt, and completely exhausted.

"Claire! Please, wait!" Ryan begged, stopping ten feet away to avoid violating the distance order. "Please, talk to me!"

Claire stopped, turning around slowly. "What do you want, Ryan?"

"My dad is facing prison time!" Ryan cried, his voice crackling with emotion. "If he gets convicted, his business goes under! My family will lose everything! Why are you doing this to us?"

Claire looked at him, feeling a sudden, profound sense of sorrow—not for what she had lost, but for how blind she had been to his spineless nature.

"Your father hit me twice, Ryan," Claire said softly, ensuring her voice reached every person in the hallway. "And you stood there and let him. You didn't protect me then, and you're still trying to protect his abuse now. You deserve every piece of the wreckage coming your way."

She turned and walked away, leaving Ryan standing alone in the marble corridor.
