Within three weeks, the court-appointed forensic accountant discovered that Frank Mercer had been running a dual-payroll system, underreporting his corporate revenue by over three hundred thousand dollars over four years while illegally withholding pension contributions from his crew of four construction workers.
Furthermore, the auditor discovered that Ryan Mercer—who served as the company's "operations manager"—had personally signed fraudulent tax returns to keep the scheme hidden.
Armed with this overwhelming evidence, Sarah Jenkins filed an emergency motion for a financial freeze on all personal and corporate accounts associated with Frank and Ryan Mercer.
On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Ryan showed up at Claire's office building. He didn't enter the lobby—he knew the protective order would result in immediate arrest—but stood outside in the pouring rain, holding a sign that read: CLAIRE, PLEASE SAVE MY LIFE.
Claire watched him from the four-story office window alongside Maya.
"He looks like a drowned rat," Maya observed coldly. "He really thought he could marry you, turn you into his family's maid, steal your money, and walk away clean."
"He never thought I would fight back," Claire said, sipping her tea. "Men like Frank and Ryan rely on women being too ashamed or afraid to cause a scene. They count on our silence."
"Are you going to go down there?"
"No," Claire said. "I'm calling the police."
Ten minutes later, a patrol car pulled up to the sidewalk. The officers checked the protective order details on their computer, stepped out, and placed Ryan Mercer in handcuffs for violating the distance restriction of the court order.
