Chapter 2 - EVIDENCE AND ASHES

Thirty minutes later, Claire stood in the brightly lit bathroom of Maya Collins’ downtown high-rise apartment.

Maya was crying as she applied a cold compress to Claire’s bruised cheek. Two dark red handprints were rapidly bruising across both sides of Claire’s face, and her bottom lip was swollen.

"That monster," Maya sobbed, gently dabbing a cotton ball against the cut. "We're going to the police right now, Claire. You're pressing charges for felony assault."

"First, we document everything," Claire said, taking Maya's phone.

Claire took high-resolution photos of her bruised face, her cut lip, and her torn collar from every angle. Then she brought up her banking apps.

While Ryan and his family were likely still in shock at the condo, Claire moved with ruthless precision. She opened her primary checking account—the one where thirty-two thousand dollars of her hard-earned savings had been deposited to cover wedding expenses and shared furniture.

She immediately transferred the remaining sixteen thousand dollars out of the joint account and into a new, private account at an entirely different bank. She cancelled the joint credit cards she had authorized Ryan to use and placed an immediate administrative lock on her credit profile.

At 9:00 AM, Claire sat in the glass-walled corner office of Sarah Jenkins, a high-powered family law and criminal defense attorney recommended by Maya.

Sarah examined the photos on her monitor, then looked at the physical bruises on Claire's face. Her expression was solemn and fierce.

"This is not just a divorce case, Claire," Sarah stated clearly. "This is domestic abuse and felony battery. Frank Mercer committed a crime the moment his hand touched your face. The fact that your husband watched and failed to intervene creates a strong foundation for an emergency protective order and an immediate fault-based divorce filing."

"What about the money I put into their house?" Claire asked. "I paid sixteen thousand dollars for custom furniture, appliances, and renovations for our room in his parents' condo."

"We will file a motion for immediate property recovery," Sarah assured her. "And because we are filing an emergency order of protection today, the police will escort you back to that condo to retrieve every single item that belongs to you."

Claire’s phone began buzzing incessantly on the desk.

The screen showed five missed calls from Ryan, three from Diane, and a text message from Frank that read: “If you call the cops, Ryan loses his job at my company. Think about your husband’s future.”

Claire handed the phone to Sarah.

Sarah smiled thinly. "He just gave us evidence of witness intimidation. Excellent. Keep the phone on record, don't answer any calls, and let me handle the police report."

By noon, Sarah had filed an emergency Order of Protection with the Cook County Circuit Court. A judge signed the order within forty-five minutes, barring Frank Mercer, Diane Mercer, and Ryan Mercer from coming within five hundred feet of Claire, her workplace, or her temporary residence.

Armed with the signed protective order and accompanied by two uniformed Chicago police officers, Claire pulled up outside the Bridgeport condo in a large rental moving van driven by Maya’s brother.

The war had officially begun.
