Chapter 3 - THE RECOVERY

When the police officers knocked heavily on the door of the Mercer condo, it was Diane who opened it. Her hair was unwashed, and she was wearing an old apron. When she saw the two armed officers standing on her landing, her face drained of all color.
"What is this?" Diane stammered. "Officer, there’s been a mistake—"
"Diane Mercer?" the lead officer asked sternly. "We are serving an Emergency Order of Protection against Frank Mercer and Ryan Mercer on behalf of Claire Mercer. Frank Mercer must vacate the premises immediately if he is inside, or remain twenty feet away in a separate room while Mrs. Mercer retrieves her personal property."
Frank stepped into the hallway, his face twisting into a furious scowl. "This is my house! You can't enter my house!"
The officer stepped inside, his hand resting on his belt. "Sir, step back into the back bedroom immediately. If you attempt to communicate with, approach, or intimidate the victim, you will be placed under arrest for violating a court order."
Frank opened his mouth to roar, but the officer’s unyielding stare forced him to back down. Muttering curses under his breath, Frank retreated into the back bedroom, slamming the door.
Ryan emerged from the living room, looking completely broken. His eyes were red, and he looked at Claire as if she were a stranger.
"Claire... please," Ryan whispered, stepping forward. "Can we just talk? You called the cops on my dad?"
"Stay where you are, Mr. Mercer," the second officer commanded. "Allow her to pack."
Claire didn't say a single word to Ryan. She didn't look at Diane, who was quietly weeping against the kitchen counter.
Claire walked straight into the master bedroom. She pulled out large plastic crates and began packing her clothes, her jewelry, her documents, and every personal item she owned.
Then she turned to the expensive bedroom set—the king-sized mahogany bed frame, the matching dressers, the leather armchair, and the sixty-inch television she had paid for with her own savings just two weeks before the wedding.
Maya’s brother and two hired movers walked into the apartment with toolboxes.
"Take everything," Claire instructed the movers calmly. "The bed, the dressers, the television, the rug, and the light fixtures I paid to install."
"Claire! You can't leave me with an empty room!" Ryan cried out, watching in horror as the movers began disassembling the mahogany bed frame with electric screwdrivers. "Where am I supposed to sleep?"
"You can sleep on the floor," Claire replied, her voice smooth and devoid of any warmth. "Or you can ask your mother to lay out a basket for you."
Diane rushed into the doorway. "You evil, ungrateful woman! We welcomed you into this family! We gave you a home!"
"You tried to build a prison," Claire corrected her, zipping up her final suitcase. "And you picked the wrong inmate."
Within two hours, the bedroom Claire and Ryan were supposed to share was stripped down to the bare, dusty floorboards. The custom furniture, the high-end electronics, and every scrap of clothing Claire owned were loaded into the moving van.
As Claire walked out of the front door for the final time, she paused beside the kitchen counter. She picked up the cream-colored envelope containing the five ten-dollar bills Diane had handed her on her wedding night.
Claire walked over to Ryan, who was sitting on the floor of the empty hallway, holding his head in his hands.

She dropped the envelope onto his lap.
"Keep the fifty dollars," Claire said softly. "You're going to need it for your dad's bail."
