Chapter 2 - The Fallout and the Allies

The aftermath of the graduation ceremony was chaos. While the police arrived to escort Richard and Eleanor Bennett from the campus for questioning regarding financial fraud and forgery, Emily found herself whisked away by campus security into the administration building, protected from the media circus outside.
She sat in a quiet, wood-paneled office. The adrenaline that had carried her through the speech was beginning to fade, leaving her exhausted and trembling. Her left cheek was swollen and bruised, a stark physical reminder of her father’s final act of desperation.
The door opened, and Professor Caroline Hughes walked in, holding a cup of hot tea and an ice pack wrapped in a clean towel.
"Here," Caroline said gently, handing the ice pack to Emily. "Put this on your cheek."
"Thank you, Professor," Emily whispered, pressing the cold compress to her face. She winced slightly but welcomed the numbing sensation. "I'm sorry for ruining the ceremony. I didn't want to make a scene, but—"
"Emily, listen to me," Caroline interrupted, sitting in the chair opposite her. Her eyes were fierce but kind. "You did not ruin the ceremony. You exposed a predator who has used his wealth to manipulate this institution and abuse his own daughter. As the dean of this college, I am deeply embarrassed that we ever accepted his bribes or allowed his son to steal another student's hard work. You did the right thing."
"They will have lawyers," Emily said, looking down at her hands. "An army of them. My father has judges in his pocket. He has politicians. I have some evidence, but I’m just a twenty-two-year-old with no money and a ruined family name."
"You are not alone," a deep, calm voice spoke from the doorway.
Emily looked up. A tall man in a dark, well-tailored navy suit stood there. He looked to be in his late twenties, with sharp, intelligent eyes and a calm demeanor that radiated quiet power.
"Emily, this is Julian Vance," Professor Hughes introduced. "He is a senior partner at Vance & Associates, one of the most prestigious corporate law firms in the country. And more importantly, he is the older brother of Marcus Vance—the student your brother stole the algorithm from."
Julian stepped into the room, closing the door behind him. He walked over to Emily and extended his hand. "It is an honor to meet you, Emily. What you did out there took incredible courage."
Emily shook his hand, feeling a strange sense of reassurance from his firm grip. "Your brother... Marcus. I found his original files while doing research for my senior thesis. I realized his code had been plagiarized by Ethan."
"Marcus was devastated," Julian said, his voice tightening slightly with controlled anger. "He thought his career was over before it began. Richard Bennett threatened to revoke his student visa and blackball him from the tech industry if he fought back. Marcus was terrified, so he stayed silent. But because of you, we now have the leverage we need to fight back."
Julian sat down next to Emily. He opened a sleek leather briefcase and pulled out a tablet. "Your flash drive was a goldmine, Emily. But your father is a powerful man. The moment he gets out on bail, he will try to destroy the evidence, silence witnesses, and paint you as a mentally unstable, vengeful child. We need to act fast."
"What do we do?" Emily asked, her resolve hardening.
"We strike them where it hurts most: their assets and their public image," Julian explained, a sharp, calculating smile playing on his lips. "I am launching a massive, multi-million-dollar civil lawsuit against Bennett Global Logistics on behalf of my brother and several other victims of their intellectual property theft. At the same time, I will represent you, pro bono, in a civil suit for identity theft, forgery, and physical abuse."
"Can we win?"
"With the evidence you provided? We won't just win, Emily. We will dismantle them piece by piece. But you must be prepared. This is going to get ugly. Your family will try to drag your name through the mud. They will dig up every mistake you’ve ever made. They will lie."
Emily looked at her reflection in the dark screen of Julian's tablet. She saw the bruise on her cheek, but she also saw the fire in her eyes.
"They have been lying about me my entire life, Mr. Vance," Emily said, her voice steady and cold. "I'm used to it. But this time, they're going to have to do it under oath."
Julian nodded, his admiration for her growing. "Good. Then let’s get to work. First, we need to secure you a safe place to stay. Your father’s associates will be looking for you."
"I don't have anywhere to go," Emily admitted. "My lease on my apartment ends tomorrow, and I don't have enough money for a security deposit on a new place."
May you like
"You will stay at my family’s estate," Julian said without hesitation. "It is private, secure, and fully staffed. My mother and Marcus are there, and they would be honored to have you. You will be safe there, Emily. I promise."
Emily felt a tear slip down her cheek, but this time, it wasn't from sadness or fear. It was from the overwhelming realization that for the first time in twenty-two years, she was not fighting alone.
