Chapter 6 - The Counterstrike

With Jason Alvarez’s signed confession and the physical contract in their possession, the tide of public opinion shifted overnight. Julian organized a press conference outside the federal courthouse, presenting the evidence of Richard Bennett’s attempt to buy off witnesses and fabricate evidence.

The media coverage was explosive. The headline "BENNETT GLOBAL CEO ACCUSED OF WITNESS TAMPING AND FORGERY" dominated every news channel. The university, facing massive public backlash, officially announced they were launching an internal investigation into Ethan Bennett’s academic records and stripping him of his degrees pending the outcome.

Richard Bennett was backed into a corner. His company’s stock was plummeting, investors were pulling out, and his board of directors was demanding his immediate resignation.

But a cornered predator is at its most dangerous.

One afternoon, while Emily was preparing for her deposition in Julian's office, she received a text message from an unknown number. It was a video file.

With a sinking feeling, Emily tapped the video.

The screen showed a dimly lit room. Tied to a chair, looking terrified and bruised, was her Aunt Clara. Behind her stood a man in a dark hoodie, his face obscured.

A voice, heavily distorted, spoke from the speakers:

"Emily. You think you’ve won. But you forgot that family always comes at a price. If you testify at the deposition tomorrow, your aunt dies. If you want her to live, you will bring the original flash drive and all physical copies of the evidence to the abandoned warehouse on Pier 42 tonight at midnight. Come alone. If we see any police, or your lawyer friend, she’s dead."

The video cut to black.

Emily’s phone slipped from her hand, clattering onto the desk. She felt a cold, paralyzing dread wash over her. Her breathing grew shallow.

"Emily? What's wrong?" Julian asked, immediately noticing her distress. He walked over and picked up her phone, playing the video. His face darkened with intense rage as he watched it.

"This is kidnapping," Julian growled. "They are completely desperate. They know they’ve lost the legal battle, so they’re turning to violence."

"It's my fault," Emily sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "I dragged Clara into this. She tried to warn me, and now they’re going to kill her."

"No, they won't," Julian said firmly, kneeling in front of her and taking her hands in his. "Listen to me, Emily. We are going to save her. But we have to play this incredibly smart. They expect you to panic. They expect you to go alone."

"I have to go, Julian! I can't let her die!"

"You will go," Julian agreed, his eyes shining with a calculating light. "But you won't be alone. I have contacts in the federal marshal service and a private security team of former special forces operatives. We will wire you with a hidden camera and a GPS tracker. We will surround the warehouse before you even arrive. The moment we locate Clara, we strike."

"What if they realize?" Emily asked, her voice trembling. "What if they check me for wires?"

"They will check you," Julian admitted. "That’s why we won’t use standard equipment. My security team has a highly advanced micro-tracker that can be concealed inside the heel of your shoe, and a high-definition audio transmitter disguised as a simple button on your graduation gown—the same gown you wore at the ceremony. It will look natural, like you’re still wearing your 'victory' clothes."

Emily took a deep, shaky breath. She looked at Julian, seeing the unwavering confidence and strength in his eyes. She realized how much she had come to rely on him, not just as her lawyer, but as the first person who truly cared for her safety and her happiness.

"Alright," Emily said, her voice hardening with newfound resolve. "Let’s do it. Let’s end this tonight."
