Chapter 7 - Pier 42

The wind off the harbor was freezing, carrying the scent of salt and rotting wood. Pier 42 was an abandoned shipping facility, its rusted metal warehouses standing like silent giants under the moonless sky.

Emily walked down the long, empty pier, her footsteps echoing softly in the dark. She wore her navy graduation gown, the small, hidden transmitter button securely fastened near her collar. The micro-tracker in her shoe hummed silently, sending her precise location to Julian’s tactical team, who were positioned in the shadows and on the water surrounding the pier.

In her hand, she held a decoy flash drive, packed with corrupted, unreadable data.

She reached the massive sliding doors of Warehouse 4. A single, rusted metal door was slightly ajar, a dim light spilling out from within.

Emily took a deep breath, pushing the door open, and stepped inside.

The warehouse was vast, filled with stacked wooden crates and dusty shipping containers. In the center, under a single, flickering overhead light, was Aunt Clara, tied to a wooden chair. Her face was bruised, but she was conscious.

When Clara saw Emily, her eyes widened in terror. "Emily! No! Why did you come? It’s a trap!"

"Shut up!" a voice barked from the shadows.

A man stepped into the light. It was Marcus Sterling, her father's loyal personal assistant. But behind him, stepping out of the darkness, was her brother, Ethan. He looked disheveled, his expensive clothes stained, his eyes wild and bloodshot.

"Well, well, the golden child returns," Ethan sneered, a manic laugh escaping his lips. "You really thought you could ruin us, Emily? You thought you could take everything I worked for?"

"You didn't work for anything, Ethan," Emily said, keeping her voice steady, knowing that Julian and his team were listening to every word. "You stole your degrees, you stole Marcus Vance’s algorithm, and you stole my identity to cover your father's debts. You're a thief."

"Shut up!" Ethan screamed, rushing forward and grabbing her by the collar of her gown. "You ruined my life! The university stripped my degree today! My friends won't talk to me! My father is facing twenty years in prison! All because of you!"

"Where is Richard?" Emily asked, looking around the dark warehouse, searching for her father.

"He's preparing the boat," Marcus Sterling said coolly, pointing toward the back of the warehouse, where a large shipping dock opened directly onto the water. "We’re leaving the country tonight. And you’re going to give us the original files, or your aunt’s body will be found in the harbor tomorrow morning."

"I have the drive," Emily said, holding up the black flash drive. "Let Clara go, and it's yours."

"Give it to me first," Ethan demanded, snatching the drive from her hand. He ran to a laptop set up on a nearby crate, plugging it in. "Let me check it."

As Ethan waited for the drive to load, Emily slowly moved closer to Clara, shielding her with her body.

"The drive is encrypted," Emily said, stalling for time. "You need the password."

"What is it?" Ethan demanded, glaring at her.

"The password is the date you broke my violin, Ethan," Emily said, her voice dripping with venom. "Do you remember? You broke it, and mother blamed me so you wouldn't get punished."

Ethan’s face twisted in rage. "I don't care about your stupid violin! Give me the password!"

Suddenly, the laptop screen flickered, displaying a massive error message: “DATA CORRUPTED. ACCESS DENIED.”

Ethan’s eyes widened in fury. He looked at the screen, then at Emily. "It’s a fake! You brought a fake!"

He pulled a small, silver handgun from his jacket, pointing it directly at Emily’s chest. "You lying bitch! I'll kill you!"

"Ethan, no!" Clara screamed.

But before Ethan could pull the trigger, the glass skylights of the warehouse shattered.

Tactical flashbangs exploded with deafening roars, filling the warehouse with blinding white light and disorienting noise. Highly armed security operatives dropped from the ceiling on ropes, their laser sights painting the red dots across Ethan’s chest.

"Drop the weapon! Drop the weapon now!" a voice boomed through a megaphone.

Ethan, completely disoriented, fired a wild shot into the air before a tactical officer tackled him to the ground, pinning his arms behind his back and cuffing him. Marcus Sterling attempted to flee toward the dock, but two officers blocked him, forcing him to his knees.

Julian Vance was the first to run through the front doors. He ignored the chaos and ran directly to Emily, pulling her into his arms, holding her tightly as if he would never let her go.

"Are you okay?" Julian whispered, his voice shaking with raw emotion. "I heard him threaten you. I’m so sorry we didn't move faster."

"I’m okay, Julian," Emily said, tears finally spilling from her eyes as she clung to him. "I'm okay. Is Clara?"

Julian quickly untied Clara, who fell into Emily’s arms, weeping with relief. "I’m fine, sweetheart. Thanks to you. Thanks to both of you."

"Where is Richard?" Julian asked the tactical commander.

"We have the dock surrounded, sir," the commander replied. "He didn't make it to the boat."
