Chapter 4 - The Traitor Within

The legal battle escalated into a full-scale war. Julian’s law firm filed a massive civil suit against Bennett Global Logistics, alleging systemic fraud, intellectual property theft, and racketeering. The media, initially sympathetic to Eleanor’s tearful interview, began to turn as Julian systematically leaked verified documents proving Ethan’s academic fraud and the forged signatures of Emily’s teenage years.

But Richard Bennett was not a man to go down quietly. He had decades of connections, black market resources, and a desperate determination to protect his empire.

One evening, Julian and Emily were working late in the study, surrounded by mountains of financial ledgers and legal briefs. The chemistry between them had grown over the past weeks; Julian’s fierce protectiveness and Emily’s quiet resilience had forged a deep, unspoken bond.

"We are missing one crucial piece of evidence," Julian said, rubbing his eyes tiredly. "To prove the racketeering charge and ensure your father gets maximum prison time, we need the original physical ledger of the offshore accounts. The digital files you had on the flash drive are highly incriminating, but his lawyers are arguing they were hacked and altered. We need the physical ledger. It has the original signatures and the bank stamps."

"My father kept a private safe in his study at our family home," Emily said thoughtfully. "It was behind a hidden panel in the bookshelf. Only he and his personal assistant, a man named Marcus Sterling, had the code."

"Marcus Sterling?" Julian frowned. "He's been your father’s right-hand man for fifteen years. He’s fiercely loyal. He won't talk to us."

"Maybe he won't," Emily said. "But someone else might."

She pulled out her phone and dialed a number she hadn't called in years. It was her aunt, Clara, Eleanor’s estranged sister. Clara had been cast out of the family a decade ago for refusing to participate in Richard's corrupt business dealings.

"Aunt Clara?" Emily said when the call was answered. "It's Emily."

"Emily!" Clara’s voice was filled with anxiety and relief. "Oh, thank God you’re alright. I saw the graduation video. I’ve been trying to reach you, but your mother blocked my number."

"I’m safe, Clara. I’m with Julian Vance. We’re building a case against my father. But we need your help."

There was a long pause on the line. "Emily, you don't know what you're dealing with. Richard is dangerous. He has people everywhere. Even within your inner circle."

Emily’s heart skipped a beat. "What do you mean?"

"Before I was cast out, I knew about a secret payroll Richard maintained," Clara whispered, her voice trembling. "He paid off people to watch you. To monitor your college life, your friends, your jobs. He wanted to make sure you never got close to anyone who could help you. There was someone... someone close to you who was on his payroll."

"Who?" Emily asked, a cold sweat breaking out on her neck.

"I don't know the name," Clara said. "But I know the initials. J.A. Richard used to brag about how easy it was to buy off your college friends."

Emily stared at the phone. J.A.

She tried to think of anyone she knew with those initials. Her mind raced through her classmates, her roommates, her coworkers.

Suddenly, a horrifying realization hit her.

Jason Alvarez.

Jason was her former boyfriend from her sophomore year. They had dated for over a year. He was the one who had encouraged her to keep all her research and evidence in one place. He was the one who had helped her set up the digital folders. When they broke up, it had been a mutual, clean split, and they had remained friends. In fact, Jason had been one of the few people who knew she was planning to expose her father at graduation.

"Julian," Emily whispered, her face turning pale. "We have a traitor. It’s Jason."

Julian’s expression instantly darkened. "Jason Alvarez? The one who works as an assistant in the university’s IT department?"

"Yes," Emily said, her voice shaking. "He had access to my laptop. He’s the one who told my father I had found the files. That’s why my father came to the graduation ceremony so prepared. He knew I was going to do something."

Before Julian could respond, the study door flew open. Marcus Vance ran in, looking panicked.

"Julian! Emily! You need to see this," Marcus said, holding up his phone. "Jason Alvarez just posted a video online. It’s going viral."

Julian took the phone. On the screen, Jason Alvarez was sitting in a dark room, looking nervous but determined.

"My name is Jason Alvarez," he said in the video. "I am Emily Bennett's ex-boyfriend. I’m making this video because I can’t stay silent anymore. The documents Emily showed at graduation... I helped her forge them. She was obsessed with revenge against her family. She used my IT skills to create fake bank statements and alter code metadata. I didn't realize what she was doing until it was too late. She’s manipulative, and she needs professional help."

The video had already been viewed over a million times. The comments were filled with outrage and condemnation directed at Emily.

"That lying bastard," Julian growled, his hand clenching around the phone. "He’s been bought."

"My father paid him," Emily said, her voice hollow. "He paid him to destroy my credibility. If the public believes the evidence is forged, the District Attorney might drop the charges."

"We need to find him," Julian said, standing up and grabbing his coat. "We need to get him to confess under oath."

"He won't confess easily, Julian," Emily said, standing up to join him. "But I know where he keeps his financial records. Jason is incredibly paranoid. He keeps a physical backup of all his illegal transactions in his apartment. If my father paid him, there will be a paper trail. And I know exactly how to get it."
