Chapter 1 - The Weight of the Canvas Bag

The heavy silence that had fallen over the grand lobby of the Valle Grand Hotel felt thick enough to suffocate. Every eye was locked on the center of the marble floor, where Sebastian Valle—the patriarch of a multi-billion-dollar empire—stood holding his estranged granddaughter, Charlotte.
Margaret Hayes, clutching her trembling chest, staggered back against a marble pillar. Her face had drained of all color, leaving her features looking like chalk under the glittering crystal chandeliers. The guests, who moments before had been sipping vintage champagne and murmuring snide remarks about the ragged intruder, now stood frozen, terrified to even breathe.
Charlotte slowly pulled back from her grandfather’s embrace. Her cheek still stung fiercely from the blow Margaret had delivered, but the pain was entirely eclipsed by the shock of his words.
"What did they steal?" "Eight years of your life."
“Grandfather,” Charlotte’s voice wavered slightly, though she forced herself to stand tall, refusing to let the gathered elites see her shake. “What are you talking about? What is inside this bag?”
Sebastian didn’t answer immediately. He turned his piercing gaze downward, his weathered hand pointing directly at the tattered canvas bag lying open on the floor. The contents—a spare sweater, a worn notebook, a plastic water bottle, and a slightly crumpled envelope—seemed entirely unremarkable against the opulent backdrop of the hotel lobby. Yet, to the founder of Valle International, that bag held an explosive secret.
“Security,” Sebastian’s voice boomed through the high-vaulted ceiling, carrying a cold, commanding authority that made even the guards hesitate. “Do not let anyone leave this room. Close the main doors. Anyone who attempts to step outside before I finish addressing this matter will find themselves permanently blacklisted from every corporate entity bearing our name.”
Hotel manager Daniel Reed swallowed hard, clutching the heavy gold-embossed invitation still trembling in his fingers. He stepped forward cautiously. “Mr. Valle... shall I call the authorities regarding the altercation?”
“Not yet, Daniel,” Sebastian replied, his jaw tightening into a hard line. He looked back down at Charlotte, his eyes softening with deep sorrow and fierce protection. “Pick up your things, my child. We are going up to the executive penthouse. You deserve to hear the truth in comfort, not surrounded by vultures.”
Margaret pushed herself off the pillar, her voice cracking with panic. “Father! You cannot possibly believe the lies she—she has been gone for eight years! She abandoned us! She chose a life of squalor, and now she wanders in here playing the victim—!”
Sebastian didn’t even turn his head to look at her. He simply raised one hand, silencing his daughter with a gesture of absolute contempt.

“Silence, Margaret,” Sebastian whispered, though the quiet menace in his tone made her recoil. “You have spoken enough lies to last a lifetime. Your reckoning has arrived.”
As Sebastian gently took Charlotte by the arm, guiding her past the sea of paralyzed guests toward the private VIP elevator, Daniel Reed hurriedly bent down to collect the scattered items from the canvas bag. When his fingers brushed against the old, unsealed envelope resting near the notebook, he glanced inside. A single flash drive and a faded legal document peeked out from the paper. Daniel’s breath hitched. He carefully placed everything back inside, zipped the bag shut, and carried it with both hands, following them into the private lift as the heavy brass doors slid shut, sealing off the stunned lobby.
